January 2009 Edition

Dr Michael Sanderson, Chief Executive Officer, 1Spatial Group

I would like to take this opportunity to wish all of our customers and business partners a successful 2009.

There were a number of highlights for us in 2008, all made possible through our collaboration with you. We delivered the backbone of the architecture to Ordnance Survey Great Britain based on an Oracle workflow and an Oracle schema that optimises the benefits of both relational and object technologies. This is going into site acceptance test as you read these words. We have also delivered the cartographic generalisation flowline to our AdV partners in the state mapping agancies in Germany and successfully helped LINZ in New Zealand to translate the topographic database to a new co-ordinate geography. Looking to this year we have been awarded a contract by Ordnance Survey Ireland to re-engineer their spatial database.

As a result of this and the feedback we received at the 2008 conference we have recently  reorganised the company to align our business more closely with market competencies. This means moving away from a regional office approach to focusing on three lines of business. These units are the national mapping agencies or data providers, the creators of gold standard reference data; enterprise information managers whose business is driven by large spatial data holdings that need to be conflated from different sources; and a business solutions unit that will enhance operational processes using spatial data to deliver incremental benefits. Our overall mission remains to redefine spatial data in a business.

The feedback also prompted us to hold specific events for our growing customer base as opposed to an industry scene setting conference. I am pleased to announce that we will be sponsoring and contributing to the Cambridge Conference, CC:The Exchange Conference 2009 covering our latest solutions to data providers. The conference will be held from 12th to 15th July 2009, at the Ordnance Survey Great Britain headquarters in Southampton, England.

We will be revamping our website shortly. Firstly, we will update its look and feel and then in a second step bring focus to allow you to communicate directly with the new business units. As all this was going on our certification to ISO9001:2008 was also confirmed. Yet again, we are in the vanguard of continually improving our service provision to deliver business benefit.

With warmest regards to all!

The company has been working on an SDI [Spatial Data Infrastructure] conformance model and an early version was presented at this event. The event was set up by the AGI Action Working Group for INSPIRE to provide an opportunity for all parties with an interest in INSPIRE to learn more about the Data Specifications for Annex 1 (Reference Datasets). These were recently published by the European Commission for comment by registered organisations (such as AGI).
