April 2009 Edition

Dr Michael Sanderson,
Chief Executive Officer,
1Spatial Group

Welcome to this month's edition of the 1Spatial eNewsletter.

In the last two editions we have focussed on our Data Provider and Enterprise Information business units, this month I would like to outline major success in our Business Solutions unit.  Wednesday 29th April saw the ministerial launch of the new Scottish Planning Portal, our involvement represents one of our biggest achievements in Scotland so far and it reinforces our commitment to work in national infrastructure programmes. This is where our experience and competence lies, working at a local level to build and deliver solutions for national consumption. As part of this programme, as a subcontractor to IDOX, 1Spatial will be working together with almost every Local Authority in Scotland.

Also in this edition, we would like to highlight our technology focus on generalisation. 1Spatial has been involved in this advanced area of geospatial data management for more than 10 years and has been fortunate to have had the support of a number of industry leading organisations during this period. One such group that has developed around our generalisation solutions is called MAGNET - Mapping Agencies Generalisation NETwork. I'm pleased to tell you that the activities of this group and our our wider generalisation capabilities will be presented at industry events like GI2009 and CC The Exchange in the coming months, with papers accepted for ICC 2009 in Chile later in the year.

1Spatial is very pleased to announce their collaboration with IGN e.V. - the Symposium organisers, and highlight their involvement in this international symposium taking place in Dresden (Saxony / Germany).

Special Focus - Business Solutions Business Unit:
Scottish Government ePlanning National Launch

As mentioned in the introduction the public launch of the Online Applications and Appeals website for the Scottish Government ePlanning initiative took place on 29th April. This is the first of 3 projects in this initiative:

Further information can be found here.

The Scottish Government ePlanning Initiative consists of  three streams:

Stream 1- Online Applications and Appeals: 1Spatial delivered the mapping component of the Scottish Government online Applications and Appeals website.
Stream 2- Online Planning Information Systems: 1Spatial delivered this component in to 13 of the Local Authorities in Scotland.
Stream 3- Online Local Development Plans: 1Spatial will deliver this component to 24 of the Local Authorities in Scotland.

1Spatial has delivered the spatial infrustructure and mapping component of the ePlanning website. This enables a user to search via a map for the location of their planning application and then purchase a licence to use the OS MasterMap data in their application paperwork. The user can then go on to edit the map, marking up the property boundary to which the application applies; the boundary of any neighbouring properties owned by the applicant and also any neighbours that have been notified of the plans.

The mapping component is integrated into a planning application website provided by IDOX and 1Spatial is a subcontractor to IDOX in this national initiative. Other phases of this initiative are ongoing will be delivered throughout 2009 and into 2010.

Data Integration Challenges for Reducing Street Works - Integrating Utility Asset Information
By Anthony Beck and Graham Stickler

'In this article issues associated with sharing geospatial Utility asset data are explored. Different data issues are discussed along with ways in which these issues can be addressed to produce a solution that meets the needs of all stakeholders. A good example is given with a collaborative approach to Utility Asset integration and sharing in the UK is the VISTA project (Visualizing integrated information on buried assets to reduce Street Works). Similar initiatives abroad show the necessity of solving the issues addressed here.

1Spatial's Steven Ramage takes a slightly different view on SDIs.
How valuable are our efforts on SDIs if we don’t actively address the human issues? Think about all the government regulations, technical implementation plans, internal processes and procedures, data sharing networks and so on. These are arguably meaningless if there is no buy-in or understanding from the people who must deliver against them.
