NAVTEQ Traffic Announces Integration of Nokia GPS Data

Nokia GPS data available for NAVTEQ Traffic products in Europe and North America

CHICAGO, Sept. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- NAVTEQ, the leading global provider of digital map, traffic and location data for in-vehicle, portable, wireless and enterprise solutions, announced that GPS data from Nokia handsets is now being integrated into NAVTEQ Traffic(TM) products in Europe and North America.

Currently in the initial stages of integration into NAVTEQ Traffic data feeds, Nokia GPS data will first bolster NAVTEQ Traffic Patterns(TM) which enables accurate route planning and improves trip time estimates based on likely, or historic, traffic conditions. By the end of 2009, real-time data will be collected over cellular networks to fuel NAVTEQ Traffic a comprehensive up-to-the minute solution. NAVTEQ Traffic delivers detailed information about the speed that traffic is moving and incidents such as accidents, allowing navigation devices and drivers to make smart routing and re-routing decisions.

The addition of Nokia GPS data, collected from millions of Nokia handsets, will significantly increase the amount of traffic data to provide the most comprehensive coverage throughout Europe and North America. With Nokia GPS data, NAVTEQ Traffic will expand its coverage to include more traffic data collection on main arteries, where traffic data is mainly captured today, as well as broadened coverage of primary and secondary roads.

"The integration of Nokia GPS data highlights the benefits consumers receive from NAVTEQ and Nokia working closely together," commented John MacLeod, executive vice president, NAVTEQ Connected Services. "Nokia's reach is unprecedented and will enable us to dramatically enhance and expand our traffic offerings around the world."

Nokia data is collected anonymously from handsets and delivered to NAVTEQ Traffic for aggregation with other traffic data sources and quality verification. The aggregation of Nokia GPS data provides that individual consumer privacy is protected.

"Nokia continues to look to build broader communities and deliver technologies that improve the lives of consumers," said Michael Halbherr, head of Social Location Services at Nokia. "Part of our commitment is to make sure that consumer privacy is protected while offering valuable traffic information so that consumers have the latest information when needed."
