New equipment readied for Pléiades (Spot Image)

Toulouse, 25 March 2010 - The Pléiades terminal has arrived and is ready to be installed at Esrange in Sweden, where it will be connected to the antenna at the receiving station in Kiruna, north of the Arctic Circle. Operated by the Swedish Space Corporation (SSC), the Kiruna station provides excellent responsiveness with its ability to receive data from satellites for up to 10 orbital revolutions a day.

This terminal is identical to those to be deployed at other receiving stations around the globe. It complements the receiving infrastructure at the headquarters of Astrium affiliate Spot Image in Toulouse, France, which comprises a receiving antenna that is already up and running and the civil receiving station that recently completed acceptance testing on 19 March.

Developed by the French space agency CNES, the Pléiades programme is leveraging the very latest innovations in space technology. Pléiades 1 and 2 offer exceptional agility to ensure maximum imaging opportunities at each overflight of a region of interest. Operating as a constellation, the two satellites can also view out to 30° and even 45° off track to provide daily revisits to any point on the globe.

Pléiades 1 and 2’s remarkable image acquisition capacity will allow Spot Image to fulfil a large number of requests simultaneously. Very-high-resolution (50 cm) colour Pléiades products combined with high-resolution SPOT data—2.5 m with SPOT 5 and 2 m with SPOT 6 and 7—will provide a broad palette of satellite data solutions to 2020 and beyond.

Astrium, the satellite prime contractor, delivered the Pléiades 1 satellite to CNES in November 2009, in line with the programme schedule. Spot Image is the civil operator and worldwide exclusive distributor of Pléiades products (imagery and receiving infrastructure).
