(May 13, 2010/Harrisburg, Pa.) GeoDecisions, an information technology company specializing in geospatial solutions, is performing a geographic information system (GIS) data inventory and assessment for the New York/New Jersey Regional Catastrophic Planning Team.
The GIS data inventory project will establish a directory of GIS data owners throughout the region and the geospatial data sets they maintain to support effective emergency management planning, response, and recovery. Participating state and local governments cover 30 counties surrounding the New York City metropolitan region in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania.
To accomplish its goals, GeoDecisions is employing a thorough project approach to identify data owners and their points of contact, perform a regional data inventory, and conduct a gap analysis of available data. The gap analysis will determine what additional data sets and/or attributes need to be maintained to support emergency management and response to catastrophic events. Examples of data sets covered by the project include utilities, telecommunications lines, transportation systems, evacuation shelters and routes, petroleum and chemical storage sites, fire and police departments, flood zones, government and military facilities, and property data.
This effort is funded through the Regional Catastrophic Preparedness Grant Program (RCPGP), a new Department of Homeland Security (DHS) initiative that seeks to enhance the preparedness of regional governments for catastrophic events such as major hurricanes, pandemic disease outbreaks, or terrorist attacks. The RCPGP focuses on the highest risk urban areas, as defined by DHS under the Urban Areas Security Initiative program. The population within this region is 22 million or one out of every 14 Americans. The RCPGP requires large urban areas, as well as associated state and county governments, to build regional response and recovery plans that will enhance their ability to work together and assist each other in an emergency.
