DeLorme Professional Insider October 2010

Notes from the XMap Crew

The big event for the XMap crew in the coming weeks is the Windpower 2010 conference in Dallas, Texas, from May 23rd to 26th. In previous years, we have had the privelege of speaking with countless XMap users who shared their experience with our products and have helped us understand the needs and challenges of the industry so we can continue to develop workable solutions that serve the growing alternative energy sector.

If you are one if the estimated 20,000+ who are planning to attend this year, please take some time to stop and talk with the XMap crew at booth 9946 in the exhibit hall. We will be offering advice on the application of XMap for wind energy development, demonstrations of the new XMap Forms capability for data gathering, assistance with your technical questions, and we will be giving away an Earthmate® PN-40 GPS receiver to one lucky winner.

Closer to home, the Maine Wind Energy Initiative has designated May 9th to 15th as Maine Wind Week. The intention of this event is to acknowledge the work being done in the state to promote the development of wind energy. Throughout this week, an informational kiosk will be set up in the lobby of DeLorme’s headquarters in Yarmouth which will provide some detail on DeLorme’s work in the wind industry. If you see us during that or any other week, you can also take some time to admire Eartha, the world's largest rotating globe.

We hope to see you at one of these two events.

XMap at Work–Using XMap in the Wind Energy Development

XMap is a perfect fit for the wind industry. It provides just the right level of GIS functionality at a price that meets the budget constraints of companies of every size. It is flexible, easy-to-learn, and is ideally suited for the mobile-based working conditions inherent in wind energy development.

All this helps explain why XMap has become the first choice for mapping and GIS in the business of wind.

This article explains the role played by XMap during all phases of the development of a wind project.

Where on Eartha

While it may come as a shock to many of March’s Where on Eartha entrants, the country within which the pushpin was located was not Malaysia.

XMap Q&A – What is the difference between XMap's Synchronization and Check-Out/In processes?

A lot has been written in recent editions of the DeLorme Professional Newsletter about enhancements to XMap’s synchronization tools. For instance, it now supports form-based data gathering in XMap Professional via the synchronization tool. Additionally, mobile workers can automatically submit photographs or jobsite reports as embedded documents as part of the two-way synchronization process.

Less attention has been paid of late to a component of XMap that has been an integral part of the suite for many years. The Check-out/in tool offers a powerful alternative for data distribution that offers a level of functionality and data editing capability beyond that which is available as part of synchronization.

This article explains the procedure for checking out data and offers advice on when check-out/in might be a better option than synchronization.

If your work takes you to some distant and unfamiliar place, take along a copy of XMap with the new XMap World Base Map.

Conveniently delivered on a USB thumb drive, this unique global map dataset provides routable roads and major city streets; elevation data for topographic map rendering; cities, towns, and geographic features; and much more.

As with all XMap datasets, the XMap World Base Map can be easily transferred to an Earthmate PN-Series GPS receiver for the best in worldwide map portability.

Tab Hint – Customizing the Topographic Base Map in XMap

Did you know that you can customize the contour interval in XMap’s topographic base map? Or that you can adjust the azimuth and elevation angle of the sun to change the shaded relief pattern? What about adjusting the size of the map features and text to make it easier to read for those of us whose eyesight might not be as good as it used to be?

The vector-based approach to topographic mapping, as exemplified in XMap, opens a world of possibilities for customizing or optimizing the base map for each situation.

This article describes the many ways in which you can adjust the concentration of features and appearance of objects in the base map as a means to accentuate the display of your data layers.

Data Flow in XMap GIS Enterprise

One of the challenges in presenting the capabilities of the XMap Enterprise suite is describing the flow of data and role played by each of the three versions of the software in this process. It was this challenge that motivated the XMap crew to produce a visual representation of this data flow.

At the center of this flow is XMap GIS Enterprise, which incorporates data from numerous sources and develops and manages the distribution process for sending the appropriate data to those working outside and for integrating the collected data into a central GIS.

XMap Spotlight

Continuing the theme of wind energy development, this month’s XMap Spotlight features a stunning 3-D map showing wind resources in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, east of Bakersfield, California. Analysis of terrain and wind energy potential is a critical component in the development of wind energy projects and this map effectively combines both.

Click the map image to see a full screenshot.

The wind resources data was downloaded in shapefile format from the website of the National Renewable Energy Lab . This layer was imported into XMap and classified to portray the areas of maximum potential in shades of red and moderate potential in shades of blue. Areas of limited potential were rendered transparent, allowing the underlying base map to show.

The imagery is DeLorme’s SAT 10 satellite imagery which can be downloaded through XMap’s NetLink Map Library service. Although this imagery is of relatively low resolution, it is ideally suited for this type of application where a regional perspective is needed. Lower resolution translates to smaller imagery file size and quicker map rendering with acceptable imagery quality at lower zoom levels.
