Seeing the wood for the trees – Blom is providing a greater LiDAR capacity for UK forestry

  • May 18, 2011 -- Since November 2010, Blom UK have owned and operated the Optech ALTM 3033 LiDAR previously owned by Cambridge University’s Unit for Landscape Modelling. The instrument previously flown by the Unit was purchased by Blom UK as the university no longer wished to capture its own LiDAR data.

Specifically optimised with full waveform digitisation for data capture on forestry projects, the LiDAR is now operated by Blom from their UK base in Coventry. Blom now provides scalability and a volume processing capacity for UK Forestry projects, based on their wider expertise from the Scandinavian forestry market. Blom have been working extensively in this market for over 10 years and their well-developed forestry products are widely used in other European countries.

For the UK’s smaller forestry market, Blom also provide for research applications, using Cambridge University as a sub-contractor. This complements Blom’s standard products of; vegetation mapping, urban tree proximity mapping, forest stand delineation, forest inventory and valuation.

This increased capacity and improved offering comes when, in early March, plans to sell off 258,000 hectares of state-owned woodland in England were abandoned after Environment Secretary Caroline Spelman told MPs the government had “got this one wrong”. Blom recognise that the revision of this policy now requires these cost-effective solutions to help manage the UK’s valuable woodland resource.
