50 Shades of Greyscale set to be a best seller

October 01, 2012 -- Australia’s market-leading digital base map, used by organisations such as Woolworths and the Australian Bureau of Statistics, is now available in greyscale – making it easier than ever for businesses to highlight their own data in online maps.

The MDS Greyscale Foundation Map, developed by MapData Services and unveiled for the first time at Ozri 2012, includes all the standard features of the full-colour MDS Foundation Map – but is delivered in 50 shades of grey.

MapData Services’ Data Manager Edwin Haverkamp said the new greyscale base map provided businesses with more options for data visualisation.

“The MDS Foundation map is Australia’s most authoritative, up-to-date base map – and making it available in greyscale provides Australian businesses with more options than ever before when developing their own digital maps,” said Mr Haverkamp.

“Greyscale maps draw attention to your business data and thematic content by providing a neutral background with minimal colours.

“It gives you the freedom to better represent key information, while still providing a powerful geographic context, so you can really bring your data to life.

“The MDS Greyscale Foundation Map empowers users to create visually compelling map graphics which helps others view your data as you intended, without losing the context that an authoritative basemap can provide.”

Mr Haverkamp said the greyscale map can be used as a basis for any type of online or desktop mapping – including store locators, a mobile app or geo-demographic analysis.

“Like our standard base map, the Greyscale Foundation Map draws on the most authoritative data sets available – PSMA in Australia and LINZ in New Zealand.

“This means businesses can relax knowing they’re working with maps that are accurate and up-to-date – which is enormously important when delivering online applications such as store locators and distance calculators.”

MapData Services officially launched the Grayscale Foundation Map at last month’s Ozri 2012 – Australasia’s largest Geographic Information System (GIS) conference.
