PITTSBURGH — (BUSINESS WIRE) — October 14, 2014 — Michael Baker International recently announced that it has been awarded the contract for the Statewide GIS Strategic Plan 5 Year Update by the Virginia Information Technologies Agency (VITA). Michael Baker International will assist VITA in charting a path towards an interoperable geospatial environment using effective coordination, collaboration, communication, and creative services across the Commonwealth.
“In the Commonwealth of Virginia, geospatial technology can provide solutions in areas such as public safety, emergency management, transportation, natural and historic resources, environmental protection, health care, land use, and economic development,” said Jonathan Soulen, AICP, GISP, Michael Baker International GIT Group Manager.
Michael Baker International will work directly with stakeholders across the state of Virginia to define the strategic direction of GIS goals and initiatives in the Commonwealth. This strategic plan will help formulate the vision, strategy and recommendations for key initiatives such as Next Generation 9-1-1 (NG911). The plan will aid the Commonwealth in developing and maintaining geospatial standards, facilitating geospatial educational opportunities, providing framework basemap data layers, and identifying and developing innovative technical solutions.
“This project brings Michael Baker International’s commitment to meet the strategic objectives of the state and municipal governments within the communities we live and work,” said Robert Hanson, the Company’s National Practice Lead for Geospatial Information Technologies (GIT). “The demand for government to produce and disseminate accessible GIS data is constantly expanding. It takes a great strategy to invest wisely in such data and reap the benefits.”
