Philadelphia, Pa, Oct 23, 2014 -- Hany Hassaballa, E.I.T., a senior geographic information system (GIS) analyst with GeoDecisions based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, wrote a paper published in Directions Magazine titled, " GIS is NOT a Load of Garbage," highlighting the use of GIS in solid waste operations. GeoDecisions is an information technology (IT) company specializing in enterprise geospatial solutions.
Written as part of his GIS Professional (GISP®) certification process, Hassaballa’s article explains how GIS provides an effective means to import, manage, and examine solid waste data through an integrated approach. Examples include field operations supported by spatially enabled dashboards based on the Esri®ArcGIS Online platform and in-vehicle capabilities. He also explores analytics that define the best solid waste collection routes and approach to asset maintenance and operation.
Hassaballa applies his dual engineering and GIS background on relational database management systems, cartographic display outputs for maps, and spatial data representations. In Spring 2014, he won GeoDecisions’ inaugural Map-A-Thon contest by using Esri Story Maps to illustrate U.S. baseball fan coverage and demographics that highlight population, percent of higher education, average income, and unemployment statistics.
A member of the Egyptian Engineering Syndicate, Hassaballa has worked in the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Morocco, and Egypt. He holds a bachelor of science in civil engineering for highway and airport design from the Cairo University in Egypt and achieved a master of science in geo-information management in urban planning from the Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation (ITC) in Enschede, Netherlands.
A printer-friendly version of Hassaballa’s GIS solid waste paper is available to download from GeoDecisions’ website.
