Introducing a New Remote Sensing Guide

Sep 28, 2015 -- I’m introducing my new field guide to remote sensing: Essential Earth Imaging for GIS. This 115-page book provides basic understanding of modern multispectral images and three dimensional point clouds enabling GIS professionals and college students to more fully understand and utilize visible, near infrared, shortwave infrared and thermal infrared spectral bands in false color, composite imagery. Point clouds, derived from lidar and photogrammetry, are explained and evaluated for defining surfaces and measuring water depth and vegetation canopy height.

Designed for those without an engineering background, the fully illustrated book explains in a nontechnical way the fundamentals of image formation and atmospheric effects and provides an orientation to sources of free and commercial imagery. Image processing for practical application in GIS is explained with appropriate work flows. A chapter on photogrammetry provides a fundamental understanding of modern, ortho-mosaicking and point cloud generation software enabling readers to fully exploit products produced from unmanned aerial systems. The last chapter on extracting information from imagery provides complete advice on optimizing heads-up digitizing of features in GIS as well as a limited introduction to automated feature extraction.

Companion computer exercises are available from Esri Press along with an ArcGIS software trial to enable learning by doing.

The book is available from Amazon and Esri Press: Fox, L III (2015) Essential Earth Imaging for GIS, Esri Press, ISBN-10: 1589483456
