SensorUp Demonstrates How to Combine Wearables to Keep First Responders Safer

Washington, D.C. - June 15, 2016 - Canadian Internet of Things (IoT) developer SensorUp has demonstrated how wearables such as smart watches and shirts can work together to keep first responders safer in the field. The company has developed an IoT platform that configures smart devices to alert the user when he or she is approaching a dangerous situation. For example, if the sensor in one of the wearables detects dangerous gasses, it can send a message to the wearer via the smart watch to leave the area immediately.

SensorUp demonstrated its platform and application this morning with the Department of Homeland Security Science and Technology (DHS S&T). The demonstration took place this morning in the US Capitol Building in Washington D.C. Developed with the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC), the IoT platform shows that it is possible to combine smart watch alerts with other devices, including shirts that monitor the biometrics of first responders. The single situation management application makes it possible to more accurately monitor and warn the health and safety of these front-line workers. This method of combining devices is an example of the practical use of IoT.

The Open Geospatial Consortium standards were used to combine the disparate wearables and other sensors into single platform and application. Standards-compliance is critical in IoT, as it makes it possible to exchange data between disparate sensors.
