Humanitarian Information Efforts in Iraq -- Creating a Common Operational Picture

Here in the U.S., with our limited view of the news in Iraq, we are not told how reconstruction efforts are progressing in the country as a whole. “You look on the map and see the areas where there are problems, like the Baghdad corridor, which is not that big of an area, only 2% of the land mass. The rest of the country is improving,” according to Messick. “Operations are beginning or have started, both in mine/UXO clearance and most of the health and education programs. In the south, they organized high school progression exams and university exams and are also getting repairs done to the water, fuel, and electrical infrastructure. And this needs to be brought together so people can visualize this work on the maps.”
