25 October 2005, Aylesbury – RWE Thames Water has selected ESRI (UK) to provide a Corporate GIS Solution which will enable the Utility provider to achieve improved customer service, asset and operations management by enabling information sharing, business reporting, performance monitoring and measurement.
ESRI (UK), in partnership with two of RWE Thames Water’s IT partners - Atos Origin and WIPRO - will implement an ESRI-based centralised information repository on an Oracle database for key asset, customer and financial information along with desktop and web-GIS solutions. The GIS, which includes Miner & Miner’s ArcFM (an extension to ESRI’s ArcGIS designed specifically for utilities) and MWHSoft’s Infowater (a hydraulical modelling package which runs on ArcGIS), will be used across the organisation, but specifically within key functions such as the Update Environment, where engineers are responsible for maintaining underground asset records and Risk Assessment, where burst and planned outage consequences are analysed.
In a second implementation phase, the GIS will be integrated with other key RWE Thames Water corporate business information systems, to ensure that it is capable of providing critical business information on demand across the organisation.
At present there are 17 legacy GIS solutions, from a number of suppliers, in use across RWE Thames Water and no central database for asset information or base mapping. This MEANS there is little or no integration between the different GIS or between the GIS and other key business systems, resulting in duplication of functionality and data, and lenghty manual processes for information sharing and reporting.
“Going corporate with ESRI GIS will allow us to consolidate information on assets, operations and customers and improve service levels in these three key areas” says Jim Brown, RWE (UK) IT Director. “Additionally, it will support OS MasterMap which we will be migrating to in the near future.”
“Following a pilot with ESRI (UK) and an in-depth competitive tendering process, we chose them for the project based upon the rich functionality of the water and waste water GIS solution and the open architecture of the software that allows it to integrate with Thames Water’s other key business systems. We were also reassured by ESRI’s proven track record in the Utilities market.”
