Victorian Regional Water Authority Standardises on Open Spatial Solutions

AUSTRALIA, Syd., Dec. 8, 2005 - Open Spatial Australia today announced that North East Water, has selected it to supply its Corporate Spatial Solutions. North East Water provides water and wastewater services to a population of 95,000 Victorians in 36 towns, localities & cities in North East Victoria.

Bridging the gap between Engineering (CAD applications) and GIS (Geographic Information Systems) is a priority for all GIS users looking to improve productivity. Addressing the convergence of CAD and GIS data is a key differentiator in the Open Spatial offering that will deliver direct productivity gains for North East Water staff. As an example, the ability to process drawings from development sub-divisions automatically (into the corporate database for access by all staff throughout the organisation) will reduce the current time needed to validate as-constructed drawings and incorporate them into the GIS.

The chosen solution is based on the premise of Data Quality, Accuracy, Integrity and Remote Data Availability. Included in the offering is the popular Munsys (Spatial Data Management Business System), and enlighten Open Spatial’s own browser based Spatial Distribution solution. These applications are based on pervasive, risk-averse technologies from Oracle and Autodesk.

Eamonn Tobin, Executive Manager of Information Services at North East Water commented that; “The implementation of an Open Geospatial compliant system would pave the way for the future, and allow for the continuation of the development of a complete business management solution. This would allow the Open Spatial Solution to become a core interface of the Authority’s corporate data with direct asset management integration”. The Open Spatial solution provides a single location based user interface into the organisation’s many corporate applications and places total emphasis on minimising and eliminating data redundancies and data duplication experienced by traditional GIS implementations.

Michael Hardman Spatial Systems Administrator at North East Water stated that; “Open Spatial delivers an “off-the-shelf” solution that provides all the necessary functionality Open Spatial Australia required by a water utility. Importantly it includes the business rules that give me confidence in our data maintenance, irrespective of the operator. Open Spatial will take our Authority’s Business Management System to the next level of sophistication”.

A cornerstone technology in the Open Spatial offering is Oracle Locator/Spatial, Oracle’s move on the established GIS vendors has created opportunities for companies, like Open Spatial, to focus on niche markets and build business solutions that deliver fast returns on investment.

Oracle claims that between 80 to 90 percent of what a typical GIS user needs from a GIS can be delivered directly from the database. The power of Oracle combined with the CAD heritage of Autodesk delivers a level of accuracy and precision that is unprecedented to the GIS community. Open Spatial Australia is a recognised spatial data quality management company delivering accurate spatial data management to Utilities and local government agencies.

“North East Water is a committed Microsoft SQL Server site. However we recognised that the spatial functionality of Oracle Locator complements the information held within our corporate databases. Our research from existing customers indicated that with Open Spatial’s “DBA in a Box” approach to Oracle, we will have no additional maintenance impact on what we currently have in place for Microsoft SQL Server. An important facet of the project with Open Spatial is to seamlessly integrate our spatial and corporate applications including integration to Gentrack Billing System, and our Asset Management and Business Management Systems which run on Microsoft SQL Server.” added Hardman

Anthony Jahshan Managing Director of Open Spatial Australia noted that: “North East Water is a highly respected Regional Authority in Victoria constantly looking for innovative business solutions that improve efficiencies and meet key performance indicators. To be selected over multi-national vendors in our industry is testament that local innovation continues to lead the way“.
