Australian Indigenous Land Managers use ER Mapper for Remote Sensing

Perth, Australia, 8 February 2006 -- The Batchelor Institute of Indigenous Tertiary Education® (BIITE) has purchased the ER Mapper image processing application to assist their Land Management students in analyzing satellite imagery. Indigenous Land Managers are faced with the difficult task of managing large areas of land with limited resources and little information on the current state of the environment. ER Mapper and associated Remote Sensing techniques are important tools providing cost effective information to assist in the management of these areas.

Tim Whiteside, BIITE’s Acting Senior Lecturer in Natural and Cultural Resource Management said, “ER Mapper will help our Indigenous Land Management students immensely. We currently run classes whereby second and third year students undertake remote sensing activities as part of their course requirements. Students will use ER Mapper to analyse remotely sensed data to address land management issues.”

Tim Whiteside continued, “The Natural and Cultural Resource Management team at BIITE has been providing education and training to Indigenous Land Managers for over fifteen years. Courses offered include Diploma, Advanced Diploma and Bachelor of Applied Science (NCRM) as well as VET courses in Conservation and Land Management and Tourism”.

Darren Mottolini, Partner and Program Manager for ER Mapper Asia Pacific said, “ER Mapper is widely used in the Remote Sensing field. It is an excellent teaching tool that is used in almost all leading tertiary institutions throughout the world. With its innovative, easy-to-use algorithm concept, ER Mapper lets students concentrate on concepts rather than the operations of how the software works”

About BIITE

BIITE currently enrolls more Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students at the higher education level than any other tertiary institution in Australia. Over the last decade, programs have been expanded and diversified in response to the importance Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have placed on gaining accredited awards in the areas of professional and para-professional occupations.
