June 6, 2006 -- A marketing and advertising system, now available as a hosted computer service in Australia, puts a portfolio of powerful planning tools within affordable reach of even the smallest organisations.
For as little as $1000 a year individual retailers, franchise groups, manufacturers and distributors have online access to the service from MapData Sciences Pty Ltd to plan the location of new stores, manage sales territories and develop targeted media strategies.
The service is based on Tactician Online, the online version of software used in-house by such names as Subway, Toys R Us, Avon, ReMax, Colgate, Bayer, GE, Shell and Sylvania.
US-headquartered Tactician Corporation has entered into an agreement with MapData Sciences to host the service for Australia and New Zealand. MDS will also supply an extensive range of digital mapping data for customers in both countries.
Organisations wanting to use the service simply access it via the Internet. The required software and data remain on secure servers at MDS, overcoming the need for users to license the software or acquire new or specialised hardware to run the application.
MDS managing director, Laurie Edwards said hosting of a powerful application like Tactician Online puts it within easy reach of even the smallest organisation.
“A retailer wanting to add retail outlets or planning to implement a business model based on franchising can undertake powerful planning for a very small investment.
“It’s a financial decision to select a hosted solution. It results from the realisation that some applications are best managed by external organisations.”
Mr. Edwards explains that the real costs of some applications are those involving staff turnover and retraining in how to use an application, not simply hardware and software.
“The secret of a successful hosted service is to allow the user to do everything they want to do in an absolutely standard manner,” he says.
In a matter of minutes, Tactician Online leads the user through the development and use of quite powerful marketing and planning applications. This contrasts dramatically with the typically long learning curve and high costs associated with competitive solutions.
Mr. Edwards envisages the retailing, franchising, banking/finance and manufacturing sectors will be early adopters of the hosted service.

MDS has also been licensed to provide data on household expenditure and populations projections from Melbourne-based Pathfinder Solutions.
