Interactive Map Helps Citizens Locate Where To Vote

October 26, 2006 – The Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre Community Geomatics Centre (CGC) has developed an interactive map, publicly available on the city of Sault Ste. Marie’s website, to help the citizens of Sault Ste. Marie locate the correct voting locations for the upcoming municipal election.

"The Interactive 'Where to Vote' map is another way that GIS can assist the community," said Paul Beach, Program Manager, CGC. "The online tool is accessible at any time on the homepage of the City website and very easy to use."

To use the ‘Where to Vote’ map, users enter their address information by typing their residence number in the civic number box, selecting the street name from the drop-down menu and clicking the “go” button. The interactive map processes the request and zooms in to the appropriate voting location where the name of the building and address pop up on the screen and the corresponding voting location is marked with a star.

At street level, the interactive map also identifies the voting subdivisions and by selecting the ‘zoom to full extent’ tool, users can view the ward boundaries. Users can use the interactive zoom tools to zoom in and out and the hand tool to move the map.

The ‘Where to Vote’ map is one of several interactive maps found on the city of Sault Ste. Marie’s website using Geographical Information System (GIS) to benefit the community. Other interactive maps available on the city of Sault Ste. Marie’s website include the Heritage Features map, the Interactive Address Locator and the Official Plan.
