PCI Geomatics helps facilitate research project with the University of Guelph

Richmond Hill, Ontario – February 15, 2007:  PCI Geomatics is committed to geospatial research and development and is pleased to donate its premiere software suite Geomatica® to the University of Guelph.  As a world-leading developer of image-centric software and solutions for the geospatial industry, Geomatica will be used to employ proven image analysis techniques to analyze airborne remotely sensed data for an application pertaining to the cultivation of grapes.

Variability in soil and climate within vineyards can have a profound effect on fruit harvesting and the quality of wine produced.  This project will develop proximate and remote sensing instruments and techniques combined with GIS and GPS technology to acquire and present pertinent information to the grower and winemaker.

“PCI Geomatics is delighted to be able to contribute to this project with the University of Guelph,” said Brad Schmidt, Vice President of Sales & Marketing at PCI Geomatics.  “Geomatica will provide scientists with the tools to incorporate geospatial data into their decision making processes.”

In addition to the software contribution, PCI Geomatics will be providing onsite Geomatica software training at the University of Guelph.

“The collaboration and support of PCI Geomatics for more than ten years has been a tremendous asset for research and teaching at Guelph, and we routinely use their excellent Geomatica® suite for our remote sensing image analysis,” said Dr. Ralph Brown, University of Guelph.  “We are excited to be introducing the benefits of remote sensing and geospatial decision making to a completely new set of users with our precision viticulture project.”

Also included in this research collaboration are the Ontario Centres of Excellence (OCE), Andrew Peller Ltd. and Lakeview Harvesters.
