June 28, 2007 -- Tunbridge Wells Borough Council has updated its library of aerial photography with the acquisition of 2006 high resolution imagery of the borough.
The 12.5cm aerial photography supplied by Getmapping Plc will add value to the existing collection of aerial maps owned by the council. The imagery will provide an essential tool in monitoring developments in the region, tracking environmental changes and assisting in planning proposals. It will also be promoted to residents as an additional aid when submitting planning applications.
Peter Wain, GIS Manager at Tunbridge Wells Borough Council said: “Getmapping’s aerial photography is superb. I found the whole process from placing the order to delivery was excellent. Getmapping is a first-class supplier.
“We find aerial photography particularly useful with planning applications as it provides us with additional data that help us make decisions. We also refer the public to Getmapping because the visual aspect of aerial photography helps support their planning applications.”
With an aim to annually update its datasets, the latest 12.5cm high resolution photography from Getmapping will be used together with the council’s existing 25cm collection of 2003 and 1999 aerial photography. Combining the three datasets provides the council with information such as physical changes in the environment and the spread of urban developments. The increased clarity from the 12.5cm photography provides much greater detail. For example street furniture and boundary alterations are clearly visible; giving added value to active users in departments such as planning, enforcement and conservation.
Wain continues: “We want to keep up to date with the photography on an annual basis so we can observe changes in the borough. We already had datasets from 2003 and 1999 in 25cm resolution. Now we’ve acquired 2006 aerial photography of the whole of the Tunbridge Wells Borough at 12.5cm resolution. You expect 12.5cm to be better and it is. The definition, colour and clarity is brilliant.
“Everyone in the council could potentially make use of it – from environmental health, right through to leisure services. It’s a resource lots of people already require and will increasingly want more of in the future It will also be available to the public as background information for people using our internet mapping service.”
Tunbridge Wells lies at the heart of one of the most scenic stretches of countryside in England. Situated in West Kent, just north of the border with East Sussex, it stretches from Paddock Wood in the north, down to Sandhurst in the south. Due to its location and the quality of the environment, it is an area of intense housing pressure.
