A Serious Threat to the GIS Community (ArcNews Online)

I would like to bring to your attention a very serious threat to the GIS community. Recently, the Management Association for Private Photogrammetric Surveyors (MAPPS) et al. filed an extraordinary lawsuit against the U.S. government in federal district court. According to a recent legal briefing, this litigation "could have dramatic consequences for the entire mapping community, including the GIS industry. Simply put, an adverse outcome would effectively exclude everyone but licensed architects, engineers, and surveyors from federal government contracts for 'mapping' services of every sort and description—not just those mapping services traditionally performed by surveyors."

As the alarming content of the lawsuit filed by MAPPS in federal court has now become known to the larger GIS community, MAPPS officials have also begun a strenuous "public relations" campaign to try to pretend that their lawsuit doesn't really say what it actually says, and that it doesn't do what they clearly and directly have requested the court to do.
