Safe Software Announces Support for Oracle® Database 11g - FME to Include Advanced GeoRaster and 3D Capabilities

Vancouver, BC, July , 2007  -- Safe Software, makers of the FME® spatial ETL (Extract, Transform, and Load) platform, today announced its plans to support Oracle® Database 11g and Oracle Spatial 11g. Initial support will be for the enhanced GeoRaster capabilities of Oracle Spatial 11g, followed by support for Oracle’s new 3D spatial type. By taking advantage of these new capabilities, Safe Software continues to extend the power of its industry-leading FME platform to address the advanced spatial ETL needs of the GIS and BIM communities.

FME is a powerful spatial ETL platform that allows organizations to translate, transform, integrate and distribute spatial data from/to over 190 CAD, GIS, raster and database formats. Today, Oracle customers can use FME to read and write vector data to an Oracle Spatial database. Users can also write raster data to Oracle Spatial’s GeoRaster data type using the newly released FME 2007.

With the release of Oracle Database 11g, FME will be extended to support advanced Oracle Spatial 11g GeoRaster capabilities, such as improvements to mosaicking and new bitmask nodata capabilities. Safe Software will also add the ability for FME to read GeoRaster data. Together, these GeoRaster enhancements will bring greater power and flexibility to FME users who want to leverage their spatial data assets. Safe Software, a member of Oracle PartnerNetwork, also plans to enhance FME’s internal model to accommodate new 3D features in Oracle Spatial 11g.

“We're seeing the interest in raster and 3D spatial data grow rapidly," said Dale Lutz, CEO of Safe Software. "With Oracle Spatial 11g, we're pleased that in our next release we’ll be able to offer customers advanced GeoRaster support and initial support for loading 3D objects into an Oracle Spatial database. Our customers are excited about the synergy these expanded capabilities will add to our existing support for previous versions of Oracle.”

Today, organizations with spatial data assets can use FME’s powerful spatial ETL capabilities with Oracle Database 10g. A 14-day trial of FME is available for download at For more information on FME and Oracle, visit

About Safe Software and FME

Established in 1993, Safe Software is the maker of FME, a powerful spatial ETL (Extract, Transform and Load) technology that enables translation, transformation, and web-based distribution of geospatial data in over 190 GIS, CAD, raster and database formats. FME is used in over 116 countries by all levels of government, the utilities sector, and resource industries including mining, oil and gas, and forestry. Safe Software is a member of the Oracle PartnerNetwork and is committed to enhancing its powerful FME platform to take advantage of new innovations in Oracle products.

FME is the de facto standard for spatial ETL. It helps organizations address the complete spectrum of spatial ETL capabilities from translating to transforming to integrating to distributing spatial data. FME consists of four major components: a translation engine (FME Universal Translator), a graphical authoring environment (FME Workbench), a data inspection tool (FME Viewer), and application extenders that directly integrate into a variety of spatial applications.
