DMTI Spatial Honors Dr. Roger Tomlinson for his Pioneering influence on Location Intelligence

Markham, ON Canada – August 30, 2007. At a special dedication event held at their head office on August 21, DMTI Spatial, a leading provider of Location Intelligence, honored Dr. Roger Tomlinson for his contribution the development of Geographic Information Systems, a core technology that enables Enterprise-scaled Location Intelligence.

Early in his career Dr. Tomlinson realized that all information can be tied to a location and the analysis around that location can yield dramatic insights into the world in which we live. At the time the only way to achieve this was to sift through thousands of maps, compare the data manually and then plot the results for analysis – a process that took years to complete at a great deal of expense. Driven by “a young geographer’s need for self preservation”, Dr. Tomlinson set out to find an economical way to read and analyze maps quickly and effectively. Working in the private sector he turned to computers for his solution and founded the computer mapping division at Spartan Air Services in 1960.

“My work has been missionary work of the hardest kind. GIS came out of private industry, not a government program, and in the early years it was difficult to convince people of the potential of this new technology,” explained Dr. Tomlinson during his remarks. “At the time there was no such thing as a software developer and the idea of creating a program that could get a computer to compare two buckets of numbers and within minutes generate a third set of numbers that could then be plotted on a map was quite revolutionary.”

“We knew we had changed the world in terms of mankind’s ability to read maps,” Dr. Tomlinson continued. “In fact we had created the first new system for reading maps since 4000 years ago when the Egyptians created a way to map and plot the planting of crops based on the rise and fall of the Nile.”

“Roger Tomlinson is a visionary. He sees things that others miss. He sees the pattern behind the chaos,” said John Fisher, DMTI Founder and CTO. “For DMTI, Roger has been a source of inspiration and guidance. The foundation he set down, and the projects he has fostered, have played a major role in the establishment and evolution of our company. Roger showed how location data could be systematically applied to solve business problems and we have extended this technology deep into the enterprise.”
