Army Topographic Engineering Center to Exhibit Army Greatest Invention of the Year at 2007 Geospatial Intelligence Symposium

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS - October 19, 2007 – The Engineer Research and Development Center’s Topographic Engineering Center (ERDC-TEC) will hold demonstrations of its Joint Geospatial Enterprise System, ENFIRE, Battlespace Terrain Reasoning and Awareness system, GeoPDF mapping format, and award-winning BuckEye system October 22-24 at Exhibit #150 during USGIF’s GEOINT 2007 symposium.

BuckEye uses a digital camera and Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) elevation data to produce geospatial information for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR), high-resolution 3D urban mapping, as well as change detection/battle damage assessment missions in support of the Global War on Terror. The system was selected as a 2006 Army Greatest Invention of the Year by RDECOM and also received the USGIF’s 2006 Geospatial Intelligence Award for its delivery of a leaner, faster, more efficient method of collecting and disseminating geospatial intelligence information to deployed Soldiers.

TEC’s Battlespace Terrain Reasoning and Awareness (BTRA) system helps create information and knowledge products that capture integrated terrain and weather effects and develop predictive decision tools, empowering commanders, Soldiers, and systems with information that helps them to better understand and incorporate the impact of these effects on operations. The Joint Geospatial Enterprise System (J-GES) seeks to provide a transition pathway for basic and applied research to the warfighter. Its experimentation facility is a mechanism to prototype, experiment, and demonstrate the migration of geospatial information and services in a net-centric environment, facilitating the early transition of emerging technologies and net-centric C4ISR geospatial services.

The Center’s GeoPDF mapping format “provides maps for the non-mapper”, allowing Soldiers to print easy-to-read maps on demand and to access detailed, up-to-date information on Adobe PDF-enabled computers. GeoPDF has converted standard NGA map sheets for 6 countries involved in the Global War on Terror into the GeoPDF file format and packaged them on DVDs with a user-friendly index sheet. TEC’s recent release of a GeoPDF-to-ArcGIS extension, which is free and available only to Department of Defense agencies, allows users to import the TerraGo® Technologies GeoPDF® or geo-referenced PDF file format for viewing, manipulation and utilization as map backgrounds into ArcGIS.

ENFIRE represents a digital upgrade to the Army’s reconnaissance and construction engineering capabilities by making modern consumer and government off-the-shelf tools, such as consumer-grade video cameras and laptop computers, available at the squad level. Use of this equipment facilitates safe, accurate, and rapid transmission of information to enhance situational awareness. ENFIRE is interoperable with existing Battle Command systems.

The Engineer Research and Development Center’s (ERDC) Topographic Engineering Center (TEC), located in Alexandria, Va., provides the warfighter with superior knowledge of the battlefield and supports the nation’s civil and environmental initiatives through research, development, and the application of expertise in the topographic and related sciences. The ERDC is the premier research and development facility for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, consisting of six laboratories and one center at four geographical sites with more than 2,000 employees and an annual research program approaching $850 million. It conducts research in both military and civil works mission areas for the Department of Defense and the nation.
