Gothenburg, Sweden 2008-01-18: Appello participates in a research project aiming at stimulating the cooperation between the automotive and telecom industry. The purpose is to introduce new functions and services in a vehicle environment.
The project named OPND - Open Platform for Nomadic Devices – is a part of the V-ICT program within VINNOVA, the Swedish Governmental Agency for Innovation Systems. The projects member companies are Appello Systems, Cybercom Group, SAAB Automobile, Scania, Sony Ericsson, Volvo Technology, and Viktoria Institute. The purpose of the project is to create a platform that enables integration and usage of consumer electronics and mobile services in a vehicle environment. The development performed within the scope of the project enables the automotive industry to adapt their product life cycles to the much shorter life cycles of consumer electronics devices. Services like telephony, navigation, audio/video and TV are evaluated.
”Vehicle integration of mobile navigation applications and consumer electronics is a hot topic in the automotive industry at the moment and we notice a very strong interest in the types of solutions that we offer. The automakers are currently facing a technology change and are considering strategies to enable connections between vehicle and consumer electronics. Our technology is world leading within the area of navigation and we have had a continuous focus on designing connected navigation solutions in line with the requirements from the automotive industry. We are putting a lot of energy and resources into this area with the clear ambition to become the preferred partner to the automotive OEMs and Tier-1 suppliers to deliver connected navigation and related infotainment services”, says Anders Frantz, responsible for the Appello Automotive Initiative.
The objective of the OPND project is to enable integration of a wide range of consumer electronics accessories that are available and used in vehicles all over the world. The project will also create a platform with possibilities for mobile devices to deliver services directly to the vehicle. The platform is designed to be flexible, scalable, future proof and optimized from price point of view. Within the project, Appello has investigated and developed a number of strategies for wireless integration of Appello’s mobile online navigation service WISEPILOT® into a vehicle environment.
(1) Wireless transferred navigation via Bluetooth allows users to utilize online mobile navigation in their mobile phone and enjoy all the benefit of a vehicle integrated system. The 3D maps and other navigation information are displayed in the vehicle display and the voice instructions are played in the vehicle speaker system. The handling is very easy and the user can keep their mobile phone in the handbag or pocket and is able to fully control all the functionality offered by the navigation application from the vehicle input devices, such as touch screen or steering wheel controls. The navigation logic is separated from the vehicle platform, and the graphical user interface can be completely controlled by the automaker.
(2) Seamless wireless integration between a vehicle hosted navigation application and mobile phones for communication with an online navigation server
(3) A navigation application with functionality distributed between the vehicle platform and an online server, so called hybrid navigation.
”This is an important project for Appello, We are already world leading within the area of online navigation for telecom. This project proves that we are also a reliable supplier of the next generation of vehicle navigation systems. It highlights the strengths and the benefits of our flexible technical platform and clearly proves that our strategic positioning is correct. The fact that leading actors also within the automotive industry have chosen Appello as partner strengthens us even more in our continued automotive initiative”, says Leif Sundström Vice President and General Sales Manager at Appello.
