February 01, 2008 -- Portland, Oregon – The City of Portland Police Bureau has realized tremendous benefits as a result of technology developed by GeoNorth and the City’s Corporate GIS (CGIS) group. Working in collaboration with City staff, GeoNorth developed spatial server technology that drives the City’s PortlandMaps.com and CrimeMapper sites. The City’s Police Chief and Crime Analyst were recently quoted stating that the site has resolved many problems for the Portland Police Department as they are now able to visualize crime data. This application has also benefited the public by providing the public with online maps of crime incident information and has recently expanded to include forgery, fraud, stolen property, vandalism, sex crimes, drug laws, embezzlement and prostitution. PortlandMaps required multiple years of development and is continually undergoing improvements and enhancements. With over 2 million page views and 42,000 unique visitors per month, averaging close to 20,000 maps per hour, the spatial server technology developed by GeoNorth enables the city to provide access to over 20 different databases with the most popular requests being property, permit, photo, and crime incident related.
According to Mike Quetel, the City’s Corporate GIS Solutions Architect, the new upgrades completed by GeoNorth, which also incorporated ArcGIS 9.x technology, “have dramatically improved the stability of the servers and introduced extensive diagnostics. Most people are aware of PortlandMaps, however we also extensively use this technology to spatially enable other business systems such as permitting and licensing. Without this technology, spatially enabling business systems would have been cost prohibitive, resulted in undesired redundancy, and led to increased application maintenance. Any organization should consider this approach for implementing an enterprise GIS.”
GeoNorth understands that smaller to mid-sized Cities have similar needs for publishing crime incident information. Recognizing that smaller Cities and Counties may be more resource constrained, GeoNorth developed a less complex, lower cost but very effective solution which was recently implemented at the City of Tigard, OR and City of Pearland, TX. GeoNorth’s intuitive crime mapping solution is easy to manage and maintain and is constructed on a highly extensible framework. For more information please email
