First Commercial Satellite Constellation Successfully Launched by German-Based RapidEye AG

BRANDENBURG, Germany—(BUSINESS WIRE)—September 2, 2008— RapidEye AG, a Brandenburg-based geospatial information provider, has launched the worlds first commercial satellite constellation, making reality its goal of delivering the next generation of geospatial information services.

The satellites, launched on Aug. 29 from a DNEPR-1 rocket from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, will circle the globe 15 times daily allowing RapidEye to download image data from each satellite to an X-band antenna in northern Norway. The data will then be transmitted to the processing facilities/control station at RapidEye headquarters in Brandenburg/Havel, where it will be analyzed for customers in various industries.

The launch allows RapidEye to become a leader in offering cost-effective and efficient, next generation solutions for customers in the agriculture, forestry and cartography.

Wolfgang Biedermann, CEO of RapidEye AG, has high expectations for the opportunity to deliver a new level of geospatial data to a variety of global industries.

With our satellite constellation, we are able to observe large areas of our earth with a high revisit rate in high spatial resolution. The earth observation data obtained with our system is the basis for important management information services that haven't been commercially available until now, especially in the agriculture and forestry industries. We expect to play a decisive role in the quickly growing geospatial information market.

The RapidEye system is supported by the German Aerospace Center (DLR) as the next generation of optical earth observation and as an important public/private partnership in aerospace.
