GEO-9 Celebrates Success

April 17, 2009 -- GEO-9, the UK’s only dedicated geospatial trade exhibition, closed its doors with the organisers declaring the event a resounding success. Despite many exhibitions suffering in the current economic climate GEO-9 attracted a wide range of exhibitors including Leica Geosystems, Trimble and ESRI (UK) and the show floor featured a number of exciting product launches including a world first. The combination of commercial exhibition, a packed seminar programme and a range of networking opportunities attracted more than 750 attendees to GEO-9, which took place on the 01 and 02 April 2009 at the Ricoh Arena, Coventry, UK.

The GEO-9 show floor buzzed as Leica announced the global launch of their TS30 and TM30 instruments that use piezo technology to drive the total stations around their vertical axes. Achieving speeds of up to 540 degrees per second, with a reading rate up from 140 times per second to a staggering 5,000 the two devices are practically silent, involve virtually no moving parts and generate negligible heat meaning that the interval between servicing has been increased to 8,000 hours of use.

Phoenix Surveying Equipment was also showcasing a product new to the UK market. TopNET+ is Topcon's dedicated GNSS network correction service. Available to subscribers using a GNSS receiver unit and a mobile data connection TopNET+ enables users to carry out surveying activities without the need for a GNSS base station, as network corrections are supplied to the rover using a low cost GPRS connection, offering real time positioning in the coordinate system of choice.

A new concept in dynamic licence and mapping data solutions was also launched at GEO-9. Maps@ is a new software solution that simplifies and automates the process of managing multiple geospatial datasets and the complex licensing that governs their use, providing protection for the data provider and enabling the data user to get on with the job in hand.

In addition to the commercial exhibits GEO-9 also featured the return of the popular series of show floor seminars. Free to attend, the programme included the next instalment in the debate Cartography vs Internet mapping, an exploration of the UK Location Strategy and EU INSPIRE Initiative and advice from the Federation of Small Businesses on surviving and thriving in challenging times.

GEO-9 also co-hosted a half-day seminar supported by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS). Raising awareness of new technology, best practice and ideas, ‘Property: the changing paradigm’ included sessions covering topical issues such as ‘Flood Risk and Insurance: it’s all about location and height’, ‘Neighbour Disputes, Boundaries and the Law – there’s now a better way’ and ‘Energy Performance Certificates: efficient and timely surveys’.
