Record Numbers Registering for Landscape Architecture Meeting in Chicago

Pace one-third ahead of 2008 meeting, could set all-time record

Washington, D.C., — July 15, 2009 — Registration for the 2009 annual meeting of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) continues at a record pace. The number of registrants for the Chicago event, taking place September 18-21, currently sits one-third higher than the same number of weeks in 2008 and well ahead the 2007 meeting – then the largest gathering of landscape architecture professionals in the Society’s 110 year history at nearly 7,000 attendees.
“Our surveys tell us that the top two reasons attendees register are the education session topics and the speakers,” said Nancy Somerville, Executive Vice President and CEO of ASLA. “This year’s meeting offers more than 125 education sessions featuring a faculty of more than 250 leading experts from across the country and around the world.”

Titled “Beyond Sustainability: Regenerating Places and People,” the Chicago event takes place in one of the country’s most sustainable cities that also serves as a world leader in green roof design. The city also regularly appears among the top choices in ASLA surveys on meeting destinations.

“Chicago represents a living laboratory for landscape architects to explore cutting edge practices in landscape architecture, planning and urban design,” continued Somerville in explaining the attraction. “It sits among the most exciting and beautiful cities in the world and provides a natural host our annual meeting.”

If the rate of registration continues as strongly as in previous years, more than 7,000 landscape architecture professionals, product manufacturers and service providers will gather in Chicago this September. Highlights for attendees include:

  • An economic outlook for the industry by noted economist Kermit Baker, Senior Research Fellow at Harvard University ’s Joint Center for Housing Studies and Chief Economist for the American Institute of Architects (AIA).
  • An EXPO featuring more than 400 products and services for landscape architecture professionals. The EXPO consistently ranks as the best event of the meeting by attendees.
  • The opportunity to earn more than 21 Professional Development Hours, many of which will be accepted by the AIA, the American Institute of Certified Planners and the state licensing boards of New York and Florida.
  • “Inside the LA Studio” sessions with the renowned German landscape architect Herbert Dreiseitl and award-winning American landscape architects Ken Smith, ASLA, Raymond Jungles, FASLA, and James Burnett, FASLA.
  • Networking opportunities and employment counseling through ASLA’s annual JobLink LIVE program.
