3Di Completes MassGIS LIDAR Project

Awarded follow-on contract to complete 2D and 3D building extraction for the core metropolitan area of Boston

Boston, Massachusetts – 3Di Technologies, Inc. was awarded a contract to provide LIDAR and 3-D city modeling services for the greater Boston metropolitan area by the Massachusetts Executive Office of Environmental Affairs (through MassGIS). Partial funding for the project was also provided by the U.S. Geological Survey.

Over a two-week period, 3Di collected the required data utilizing its exclusive DATIS LIDAR system on a 24-hour collection schedule. 3Di delivered bare earth surface and digital surface models of the upper-most surface defined by the tree canopy and buildings for the entire 370 sq. mi. project area. The base data density supported the extraction of two-dimensional building footprints. A core metropolitan area centered on the City of Boston was collected at a higher data density to allow for the extraction of three-dimensional building models with high feature detail. 3Di also provided the first commercially delivered LIDAR intensity imagery.

“The unique design of DATIS provides capabilities far superior to competing LIDAR systems,“ said 3Di CEO Tim Durkin. “For example, the power of our system is such that we were able to acquire extremely tight posting data for this project with a minimum of collection passes. Competing systems would have been forced to make many additional passes in order to achieve the same results.” DATIS receives and processes up to five separate return pulses per transmitted pulse at up to 50 kHz transmitter pulse rate. The extremely dense data derived from this system is tailored by 3Di to meet the complexity requirements of a given project. 3Di’s capability provides clients complete assurance that the true detail of the terrain is portrayed.

For the follow-on contract, LIDAR data covering the core metropolitan area will be further refined to produce 3-D vector buildings on the bare-earth surface. 3Di is utilizing Schafer Corporation’s automated processing software to complete this phase of work. Schafer is employing proprietary algorithms to create a 3-D model of the City using 3Di’s data.

“The synergy between 3Di’s DATIS LIDAR data and Schafer’s post-processing has been so successful that 3Di will be utilizing these processes on future 3-D city projects,“ said 3Di Sr. Vice President Jeff Armstrong. Schafer and 3Di have subsequently reached an agreement that grants 3Di exclusive license to its post-processing methods. “3Di has delivered an unprecedented level of accuracy and efficiency through the successful marriage of the most advanced LIDAR collection system with the most trusted post-processing methods,” said Mr. Armstrong. “Going forward, we are excited to be able to provide this as a standard service to all of our clients.”

Data provided by 3Di under this contract is to be used for a variety of purposes including emergency response planning, hydrologic/floodplain modeling, assessment of natural hazards, , and impervious surface delineation. In addition, the results of this project will be evaluated by federal agencies (USGS, FEMA, and NIMA) for establishing a standard for future LIDAR mapping of metropolitan areas for homeland defense applications.

Headquartered in Easton, Maryland, 3Di provides cost-effective solutions for clients by using a unique combination of technologies. 3Di professionals consult with clients to determine the best strategy for data acquisition, integration and delivery. Through its Remote Sensing and Photogrammetric Services Units, 3Di delivers products and services designed to meet the spatial data needs of both public and private sector clients.
