GISi to develop a GIS-based sign inventory system for City of Appleton, WI

August 04, 2010 -- The GISi Team has been selected to develop a GIS-based sign inventory system, as well as data collection services, for the City of Appleton, WI. GISi will provide development and implementation of a mobile and web GIS-based traffic sign management system to track inventory, develop work plans, and track maintenance activities in order to comply with Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) retroreflectivity mandated standards which became final on January 22, 2008. GISi teamed with Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Science (RS&GIS), who will provide the data collection for the project

The GIS-based sign inventory system uses the expected sign life method that will allow the City of Appleton, WI to be 100% compliant with the FHWA minimum standards. This method calculates sign life from known sign retroreflectivity deterioration rates for combinations of sign sheeting color and sheeting type. Individual signs are replaced before they reach the end of their expected service life which the GIS-based sign inventory system will track the age of signs along with other criteria and will alert when specific signs for replacement are due based on deterioration rates/sign life.
