Greetings from East View Cartographic
High-Resolution DEM's - Partnerships make it happen

A key piece of the geospatial puzzle is the Digital Elevation Model (DEM).  EVC has a long history of creating and providing custom DEM's to its customers for utilization in an array of applications from cell phone tower sighting to natural disaster management.  As proud as we are of our in-house geospatial services, we feel that one of our greatest strengths is our ability to work with other companies in the industry.  Nowhere is this more apparent than the "behind the scenes" efforts necessary for creating highly technical DEM's.  Two major partners that make this possible for us are GeoEye and Intermap.

1. DEM derived from GeoEye-1 stereo imagery

GeoEye - In February of this year, GeoEye named EVC a Premier Partner for DEM creation.  We were chosen by GeoEye to produce high quality Digital Elevation Models (DEM) derived from GeoEye-1 and IKONOS stereo imagery.

For several years, customers around the world have benefited from East View Cartographic's imagery relationship with GeoEye.  GeoEye's choice of EVC to handle high resolution DEM creation from their imagery is a strong statement for our partnership and EVC's technical capabilities.  We have proven our knowledge for GeoEye products and have consistently and cost-effectively added value to their imagery for customers in numerous verticals, including energy and natural resources, avionics, humanitarian efforts and other kinds of corporate and government mission planning. With GeoEye's endorsement, we serve new customer applications marrying state-of-the-art GeoEye imagery and EVC's well-tested GIS production capabilities.

Intermap - Recently we re-established our distributor relationship with Intermap Technologies Inc. of Englewood, Colorado.  This agreement allows us to offer Intermap core products, including the NextMap® line of European and American high resolution digital terrain datasets.

TYVEK PLOTTING - Paper maps now available on Tyvek®

Ordinary paper maps have their place. They also have their limitations.

East View Cartographic is proud to announce the option of Tyvek® for all printed materials.  Harsh elements and rugged environments can easily be the demise of paper maps and charts.  Printing them on durable, weather-resistant Tyvek® will bring piece of mind to the hardiest of souls, from the field engineer in the deserts of Saudi Arabia to the lobsterman off the coast of Newfoundland to the peacekeeper in Afghanistan.

A continued investment in state of the art plotting allows EVC to quickly print a map on Tyvek® or paper to meet customer needs.  As an additional customer service, EVC will plot customer-owned maps on Tyvek®.

For a demonstration of the advantages of a Tyvek® map over a traditional paper map, watch this short video:

Technical Bullet

  How'd they do that?

Poland Vector Dataset
A great thing about EVC is the wide variety of clients we serve along with their wide variety of geospatial needs.  At EVC, we are always ready for a new challenge and this month's Technical Bullet is a perfect example.
Countrywide 200K Vector Data of Poland
Recently, a large client in the oil industry came to us with a request for a base layer of detailed GIS vector data of Poland.  The product we delivered is part of a countrywide 200K vector dataset of Poland created to meet this client's need.  This dataset is now available Off-The-Shelf to all.
According to our Geospatial Data Production Director, "This database is so robust it can give you the load capacity of a bridge or the material type of a power line pylon.  The user can even distinguish between a poultry farm and an animal farm or between a chemical plant and a sugar processing plant."

A robust GIS vector data layer is a vital tool for an oil company.  Poland is emerging as hot-spot in the Oil & Gas industry and our client is leading the way.  High quality vector data is perfect for the planning of almost all Oil & Gas extraction operations.  Applications such as well location, road building, pipeline routing and land-use classification are attainable with this dataset.
This dataset is authoritative, cost-efficient and available Off-The-Shelf making it an easy solution as a great mid-resolution source of much higher quality than VMAP1 data.

Utilizing our extensive global relationships in the geospatial industry, we procured the data necessary and our Geospatial Data Production team did the rest.  How they "did the rest" to make the data user-friendly for our client is outlined below.

We knew that topographic mapping of Poland was available and that turning it into GIS form was needed.  We procured a complete countrywide set of Russian born-digital topographic maps created from Russian raster topographic maps of Poland.

This topographic map derived vector data was in Russian so immediately the task of Romanizing the data was apparent.  A painstaking number of hours went into this translation process and in the end we had the entire database in English.  Our main translation reference was the NGA Gazeteer.  Included in this process was the translation of map place names and attribute table headings.

All of the objects in the native dataset were described only by a Code ID.  Realizing that the Code ID's are only beneficial if the user knows what they represent, we determined the meaning of these code values and expanded them to be more descriptive.

For example, "K56" simply had the value of "2".  To the creator of the database this means something, but the English-speaking end-user, this is use-less.  "K56" was determined as "Road above Rail Road" and described as such in the attribute table, making it user-friendly for our client .

Utilizing our geospatial skill set and toolbox to find cost-effective solutions for our clients is what we do.  We are happy to tackle new opportunities that keep us on the leading edge of the ever-changing geospatial industry.
