July 05, 2011 -- Geographic Information Services, Inc. (GISi) has been selected by the Georgia Association of Regional Commissions (GARC) to implement their GIS-based sign retroreflectivity solution framework as a pilot program that would allow its participating local governments to be in compliance with the Federal Highway Administration’s (FHWA) sign retroreflectivity regulations. This pilot program will encompass 12 local governments across 6 regions in GA.
“We see this as a win, win, and win scenario” says Brent Lanford, IT Director of the Middle Georgia Regional Commission. “It’s a win for the local governments we serve. It provides access, at a very modest fee, to a solution that will help them build a sign inventory, manage the inventory, and be in compliance with the FHWA regulations. It’s a win, win for the Regional Commissions in that we’re able to provide a much needed technology and service to our local governments and we’re able to leverage our Esri Enterprise License Agreement to provide the software required to drive the solution. This creates an immediate return on investment”.
The FHWA specifies that all local governments are responsible for identifying and implementing a sign replacement method by January 2012. GISi has developed a solution framework that offers a GIS-based approach to supporting this mandate, and offers local governments the means to collect their sign inventories as well as tools to support the overall sign maintenance activities. The solution is powered by Esri’s ArcGIS Server and offers a two-prong platform—web and mobile—approach. Both platforms come with tools to collect inventory, perform maintenance activities, query the inventory, and comply with the FHWA retroreflectivity regulations.
