MUNICH, Germany, Nov. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- The Siemens Information and Communication Mobile Group (IC Mobile) in cooperation with SignalSoft Corp. (Nasdaq: SGSF - news) have been chosen by PTC-Era to enable the delivery of Location-Based Services (LBS) across Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) and Short Message Service (SMS) to PTC-Era's subscribers in Poland. PTC-Era is Poland's largest mobile network operator and the first Eastern European mobile operator to invest in LBS for its more than 3.5 million GSM subscribers.
The recently signed contract covers Siemens' deployment of SignalSoft's Location Manager(TM) gateway as part of the Siemens Location Platform. Location Manager is a flexible location gateway that manages location data from any type of location technology. Furthermore, it links that location information with a wide variety of location-based applications such as information and entertainment services. As a solution based on the GSM standard, Location Manager will also support GPRS and UMTS, the third generation (3G) of mobile networks and services.
"By location enabling our WAP and SMS applications, we will be able to offer compelling services to our customers and thus strengthen our leadership position in Poland," said Przemyslaw Czarnecki, Executive Director, Product Development and Management at PTC-Era. "SignalSoft and Siemens' expertise and experience in location services made them the best possible partners to help us provide these exciting location services to our subscribers."
"Following a successful six-month trial by Siemens IC Mobile, PTC-Era's deployment of commercial location-based services gives the company a strategic advantage in Eastern Europe's wireless marketplace," said Dave Whalen, Senior Vice President of Worldwide Sales and Marketing for SignalSoft. "These services will generate revenues through increased mobile phone usage and will build customer loyalty."
"As a major strategic partner, we have already successfully supplied PTC-Era with GSM base stations and switching equipment since 1996 alongside intelligent network services such as prepaid and WAP technology," said Dr. Valentin Chapero Rueda, President of Networks within Siemens' IC Mobile. "Now we are looking forward to integrating Siemens' powerful platform for location-based services to help PTC-Era offer attractive new applications to our subscribers and thus extend our leading position in the market."
