"We are thrilled that Gartner selected MapD as a "Cool Vendor" for 2016 in the DBMS category. On the heels of our funding and product launch, we believe that Gartner's recognition of MapD is further validation of the promise of our core product," said Todd Mostak, founder and CEO of MapD. "There is a growing need to instantly analyze and visualize massive, complex datasets. Our innovative approach of using GPUs enables enterprises to respond more rapidly, solve more complex problems and manage operational risk more comprehensively."

MapD has seen traction across a range of big data use cases, including log analytics, GIS, business intelligence, and social media analytics. MapD's early adopters include Fortune 500 companies in the telecom, retail, finance, and adtech sectors.

The MapD database pioneers the use of Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) to allow SQL queries to be executed in parallel across nearly 40,000 cores per server, yielding massive speedups over leading in-memory databases. When paired with the MapD Immerse analytics front end, the system delivers instant visual insights into complex datasets.

The 2016 DBMS Cool Vendor report names five companies from among dozens of new DBMS entrants each year. This year's crop of companies were based on a number of distinguishing elements including new approaches to hardware acceleration, the ability to drive solutions into the cloud and the ongoing challenges of security.
