MAPPS Forum at ASPRS Conference to Address Licensing Issues

RESTON, VA., 26 April 2007 – MAPPS, a national association of geospatial, mapping and photogrammetry companies, has invited its members to bring guests to a Special Forum and Networking Reception during the ASPRS Convention in Tampa, Fla. The forum is entitled “Licensing of Photogrammetrists and Other Geospatial Professionals: State, National or Laissez Faire?”

The MAPPS Special Forum and Networking Reception will be held on Thursday, May 10, 2007, from 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm in Florida Salon III at the Tampa Marriott Waterside Hotel. MAPPS members are encouraged to invite executives from non-member geospatial firms to attend as their guests.

“Professional licensing is a topic of particular interest to the MAPPS community,” said John Palatiello, MAPPS Executive Director. “This forum is the first step toward adoption of a MAPPS formal policy on the licensure question.”

Historically, MAPPS has taken a defensive position in the states to defeat onerous licensing bills, or to amend them to at least permit grandfathering of currently practicing professionals. MAPPS was also the leader in causing a multi-organizational task force to be formed that succeeded in revising the Model Law of the National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors (NCEES) to provide for a grandfathering process for experienced photogrammetry and GIS professionals. MAPPS has also had discussions about the concept of a national (federal) license, rather than a 50-individual-state license scheme that could eventually be imposed.

Three featured speakers include two MAPPS former presidents, Kass Green of The Alta Vista Company, who will discuss the idea of a national license, and Mike Ritchie of Photo Science Inc., who will present the current state licensing system. Ritchie will also discuss past MAPPS activities in that arena. In addition, Greg Koeln of MDA Federal, will offer insights into the concept of no licensing, or the Laissez Faire approach.

The cost for MAPPS Members is $45 in advance and $55 on site. Guests accompanying MAPPS members are welcome at no charge. Online registration is available at www.mapps.org.

About MAPPS

MAPPS was formed in 1982 by a small group of U.S. photogrammetry companies as the Management Association for Private Photogrammetric Surveyors to represent the interests of private photogrammetric and aerial surveying firms. Since then, MAPPS has expanded in size and scope to become the only national association exclusively comprised of private firms in the spatial data and geographic information system field in the United States.

Current MAPPS memberships spans the entire spectrum of the geospatial community, including Member Firms engaged in surveying, photogrammetry, satellite and airborne remote sensing, aerial photography, hydrography, aerial and satellite image processing, GPS, and GIS data collection and conversion services. MAPPS also includes Associate Members, which are companies that provide hardware, software, products and services to the geospatial profession in the United States and other firms from around the world.
