16 Museums and the National Zoo Featured in Rich, Interactive Venue Maps
Washington, D.C. — May 21, 2007 — NAVTEQ’s Map Network, a world leader in destination, event and venue mapping, today announced that it has been chosen by the Smithsonian as part of an effort to enhance consumer outreach and engage Smithsonian visitors before their trip. Using Map Network’s customized, location-based content, visitors are able to navigate Washington , D.C. ’s collection of museum artifacts and landmarks in rich detail with the click of a mouse. NAVTEQ’s Map Network solution enables the Smithsonian to customize itstheir own venue maps, making it possible to provide a targeted audience with useful information at each stage of their visit: planning, while at the site and afterwards. With Map Network’s capabilities, prospective visitors are now able to access detailed online maps which are seamless with the print maps offered to visitors at Smithsonian locations. This multi-media format, combined with the ability to customize maps, facilitates an enriched experience for each and every visitor. "For the first time, we are able to offer the 23 million visitors to Smithsonian museums and other visitors to the Washington area a dynamic, comprehensive collection of information before, during and after their National Mall experience," said Smithsonian Publishing President Thomas Ott.
While the goSmithsonian site is partly sponsored by the Institute, advertising opportunities are also available on the site through Map Network’s solution. Map Network’s media channel offers the Smithsonian and their sponsors a means to communicate to an elite demographic that was previously difficult to reach.
