Tekla and Vico Software Prove 5D Virtual Construction Is Real and Achievable Today
BIM Capabilities Extend to All Project Stakeholders
In the AEC industry, the recent increase in 3D models and animations has led many to conclude a growth of BIM adoption in Construction Management. While 3D fly-through movies are recognized as visually impressive additions to sales meetings, they provide no guarantee that the building is constructible as designed. In many regards, these false perceptions have resulted from efforts to exploit the current industry-wide boom of interest in BIM.
3D constructability models must be data-rich with properties, quantities, means and methods in order to demonstrate the entire building process. Tekla and Vico Software are proud to announce their partnership to bring this 5D interoperability to market.
August 11, 2008 - Boulder, CO and Helsinki, Finland -- With a series of hands-on workshops to joint customers at their respective User Group Meetings this month, Tekla and Vico Software announce the integration of their software packages for a true 5D virtual construction environment.
"Now we understand that CAD authoring tools are the first step towards BIM," remarked Jim Barrett, head of virtual construction of Turner Construction in New York City. "The key is tying that 3D Model to a powerful database to express costs and schedules, to truly define the project and explain how, when, and for what price it can be built."
How It Works: The bi-directional data flow between the 3D model and the Vico solution allows for extremely accurate scheduling and estimating, known as the 4th and 5th dimension of virtual construction. Tekla models feed the Vico solutions which support quantity take off, cost planning, schedule planning and production control processes, engaging the owner, general contractor, and field trades with actionable, coordinated planning. Under the terms of this partnership, Tekla Structures is the authoring tool and the aggregator of the 3D models. Using Tekla's BIM data as an input, Vico calculates the estimate and ties it to the schedule.
"We've known that CAD-agnostic solutions are critical for the industry," stated Clay Freeman, Chief Product Officer at Vico Software. "Our partnership allows Tekla to author and aggregate the 3D models while advancing up the field with 5D virtual construction."
Tekla, long known as the leading AEC BIM software for structures, understands the data-rich nature of the construction phases of project delivery. Tekla Structures encompasses specialized configurations for structural engineers, steel detailers and fabricators, precast concrete detailers and manufacturers, as well as construction companies. Teaming with Vico Software, the solution scope expands to preconstruction and constructability analysis, estimating and target cost management, and finally schedule and task planning. As a result, the project team becomes truly and fully integrated, resulting in reduced and proactive management of project risk.
PreConstruction and Value Engineering Take Center Stage
The AEC industry knows integrated project delivery requires collaborative workflows to minimize errors and maximize efficiency. By combining Tekla Structures BIM models and Vico's award-wining 5D virtual construction, the result is true interoperability with high profitability and on-time project completion.
During the design and preconstruction phase of a project, a 5D model expresses a sophisticated view of the building. Drilling in deeper for design review and clash detection with the project stakeholders ensures smooth scheduling. This 4D schedule illustrates the sequencing in the construction phases. With 5D estimating in place, the project team is prepared to answer what-if scenarios on the fly, propose value-engineering options, and keep the project on track for cost and quality.
"This is an excellent opportunity to pair Vico's strengths of scheduling and estimation with Tekla's highly detailed design and fabrication structural model data," says Stacy Scopano, Business Development Manager, Contractor Segment - Tekla Corporation. "Vico's solutions combined with Tekla's Construction Management products bridges a critical gap in the industry's BIM workflows, in providing the ability to analyze planning and performance construction data, in 3-dimensional environments."
