The Birth Of Brazils' First High-Resolution Remote Sensing Airborne Radar Sensor

In November 2002, Orbisat Remote Sensing, S.A., of Brazil, finalized the construction and testing of its newly designed interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) system; OrbiSAR-1. The development of this system will raise the worldwide level of precision, accuracy and availability of spatial information data. Dr. Jo©o Moreira, Orbisat's Technical Director, proudly revealed the first high-resolution radar images derived by the new OrbiSAR-1 sensor designed and manufactured in Brazil. Dr. Moreira told the press, "From this time onwards, Brazil will have one more high technological service product, serving the enormous national and international spatial information markets. For example, the ongoing World Bank project CARTOSUR II, mapping 250 000 km� of Venezuela by Orbisat-RS, is just one of many extraordinary mapping projects being planned. It is also a strong international sign of trust into the Brazilian industrial high technology sector. Together with my team of national and international scientist, I combined the principle advantages of the RADAR technology, to create the world leading sensor in terms of precision, accuracy and reliability, while still maintaining the best possible cost efficiency factor. This will allow doing precise mapping independent of actual weather situations and vegetation coverage."

Orbisat-RS's offers a broad range of mapping products derived from radar technology. For instance, one of the most desired spatial information data in this century is the exact value of the terrain height. Orbisat's airborne sensor can monitor and measure the earth’s surface features even in the presence of clouds/rain, night or day. The achieved horizontal resolution of this information is currently 25 cm.

The future hardware activities of Orbisat RS are well defined and will soon be enhanced with the addition our new sensor; OrbiSAR-2. Plus, the development of a new 'Light-SAR' sensor, with additional frequencies to allow more applications in the area of precision farming. The corresponding software development exceeds the support of these new components and will have a strong focus onto the automated generation of value added products in almost all fields of remote sensing information.

Orbisat RS is setting the standard for accuracy, reliability, and cost-effectiveness by leveraging advanced radar technologies, processing and manufacturing of radar mapping systems. Orbisat RS is actively negotiating strategic relationships with various national and international companies within the geospatial and mapping industry, to determine the common or complementary potential in human labor, technological, financial and marketing resources.
