MetaCarta Introduces New Geographic Search and Referencing Platform That Geo-Enables Content for Location-Based Applications

CAMBRIDGE, MA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- Sep 29, 2008 -- MetaCarta, Inc., the leading provider of geographic search solutions, today announced the MetaCarta Geographic Search and Referencing Platform (MetaCarta GSRP). MetaCarta GSRP identifies places and points-of-interest in text documents, news feeds, email, reports, web pages and blogs, and assigns latitude and longitude coordinates so that the content can be searched, retrieved, and visually displayed on a map. Today, not all geographic references can be identified by traditional search engines. The MetaCarta GSRP can identify more than 190 million place names. For the first time, enterprise organizations and public sector agencies are now able to geo-enable all of their content in English, Spanish, French, Russian, Arabic, or mixed-language documents so it can be used in location-based applications to help visualize trends, generate new revenue, drive premium services, and enhance intelligence analysis.

Seventy percent of all content on the Web and in corporate repositories contains some type of geographic reference that cannot be found using traditional search engines or in location-based applications. For example, if a user were to search on the term "Manhattan," a text search engine would return results for the cocktail named Manhattan as well as Manhattan, Kansas, Manhattan, Illinois, and Manhattan, New York. It would not return references to "New York City" or the "Big Apple" unless the term Manhattan was specifically stated in the text.

"Location has always been an important factor in government, energy exploration, and environmental management applications; however the mobile internet has introduced new possibilities of combining consumer location with other applications such as social networking, digital news delivery, and revenue-generating premium publisher services," said Claudine Bianchi, vice president of marketing at MetaCarta. "MetaCarta's unique technology integrates content, search, and maps and is playing a pivotal role in building out the GeoWeb -- an effort to organize information around geography on the Internet."
