Seventy percent of all content on the Web and in corporate repositories contains some type of geographic reference that cannot be found using traditional search engines or in location-based applications. For example, if a user were to search on the term "Manhattan," a text search engine would return results for the cocktail named Manhattan as well as Manhattan, Kansas, Manhattan, Illinois, and Manhattan, New York. It would not return references to "New York City" or the "Big Apple" unless the term Manhattan was specifically stated in the text.
"Location has always been an important factor in government, energy exploration, and environmental management applications; however the mobile internet has introduced new possibilities of combining consumer location with other applications such as social networking, digital news delivery, and revenue-generating premium publisher services," said Claudine Bianchi, vice president of marketing at MetaCarta. "MetaCarta's unique technology integrates content, search, and maps and is playing a pivotal role in building out the GeoWeb -- an effort to organize information around geography on the Internet."
