Mappetizer - MapViewSVG with a new name and further functionalities

October 08, 200 -- MapViewSVG, uismedia's powerful tool to create Web maps, will now be presented with a new name: Mappetizer.
With this the name is changed, but the innovation will continue: Demanding Online-GIS-Applications on the base of vector technologies, which are supported from all major browsers and don't need any specific web server technology.

With Mappetizer 8, ArcGIS projects can be export into the SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) or into the Microsoft Silverlight format. The SVG/HTML format now integrates the modular JavaScript library Dojo Toolkit, so Dojo widgets, like menus, tabs, and other tools are provided. This is a great way to enrich websites with various interactive features that work across browsers. Microsoft Silverlight allows to develop rich internet and desktop applications (RIA) and Web map applications on up to date standards.

Especially for small and medium-sized project, and for projects which do not have to be frequently updated, Mappetizer will be the solution. With its wide field of application, the easy use of the exported Web map project, GIS data can be presented easy, appealing and innovative to a large target group. No knowledges in SVG, Microsoft Silverlight or Web server technology are needed.

If you have got appetite, more information, examples, and an evaluation copy are available on the internet:

  • OK viewer but bad svg files April 29, 2012

I have major issues with this SVG plugin software for ArcMap.
First, you cannot set the coverage map extent. You basically have to clip large coverages down to the area you need to run with Mappettizer or it will crash. This alone is enough to make this software useless for any large web map production.
Second, you currently can't set the svg map output size in points, inches, or any other measurement. I NEED to set output size if I am going to do svg files for iPads and other devices. There are many times that you only need the svg files and not a viewer. Currently all sizes are set automatically and tiled. You can turn the tiling off, but the files are monster HUGE without some way of setting output size. Some you can't even open in Illustrator.
Third, this software is WAY overpriced for the simple things it does not do. The makers of Mappetizer just don't get it. Most people now just want the svg files with good output control and not a svg viewer. Yet they have put all their eggs in the basket with the viewer and not the SVG files.
I would use one of the many free svg output programs and save your money. Test this expensive software before you buy it. I asked them to please add more control for the svg file output and all my suggestions fell on deaf ears!
