East View Embraces New Technologies to Create Historical Digital Archives

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn., USA — March 10, 2010 — East View Information Services ( www.eastview.com), a leading provider of high-quality information products and services in world languages and English translation, has adopted new technologies and converted the historical archives of Pravda, the most important newspaper of the Soviet era, into an online collection. In Spring 2010 this resource will be available in a complete archive, in full-image with searchable full text.

For many years libraries have maintained their Pravda archives in paper editions on library shelves or in microform. Libraries no longer have to dedicate shelf space or maintain outdated equipment, and users now have ubiquitous access to valuable primary-source material online. Accessing historical issues of Pravda online allows users to:

"We chose to convert Pravda due to the historical significance of this newspaper," said Kent D. Lee, President & CEO of East View Information Services. "This newspaper was established in 1912 and is the chief chronicle of Russian and Soviet history, from the beginnings of the Russian Revolution through World War II, the Cold War, the fall of the Soviet Union, and everything in between."

"The Pravda historical archive is held by many libraries in hard-to-maintain hardcopy or available only in microfilm, which can only serve a limited number of users," said Robert Lee, Director of Online Publishing. "East View has indexed the data and loaded the full-image, text-searchable files onto our fully searchable Universal Database interface, allowing researchers to easily navigate and find the articles they need quickly and easily, and export images for outside use with a single mouse click."
