Plans proceeding for New Chicago Data Center

CHICAGO, IL – April 23, 2010 – Plans for a new 315,000 square-foot data center facility on Chicago’s Near South Side are moving forward, with city approval clearing the way for design and construction.

The facility, to be located at 111 E. Cermak Road, is being developed by Chicago-based JRM Technology LLC. James McHugh Construction Co. has been selected as the design-build contractor, with Environmental Systems Design, Inc., as lead architect/engineer, Archideas the consulting architect and CS Associates, Inc. as structural engineer.

“This will be the first data center in the downtown area designed and built specifically as a data center from the ground up,” said James R. McHugh, principal of JRM Technology LLC. “Every aspect of the building will be tailored to clients’ needs, from robust redundant power sourcing to cooling systems and security.”

The development team has set a goal of fall 2010 to begin construction, with a potential completion date of late 2011.

The building will be located at the southwest corner of Cermak Road and Indiana Avenue. It is just two blocks away from 350 East Cermak Road, the 1.1 million-square-foot data carrier site in the former RR Donnelly printing plant.

“The new center’s location helps ensure a large amount of fiber providers with high-volume and low-latency fiber optic lines,” Mr. McHugh said. “With 350 East Cermak approximately 95 percent leased, firms that need very fast fiber optic transmission speeds are seeking data center space close by. JRM Technology LLC is actively negotiating with tenants for the new site.”

To meet clients’ need for power, 111 E. Cermak will be powered by a potential of 40 megawatts of electricity. What’s more, two separate ComEd substations are planned to service the site.

JRM Technology LLC plans to seek Gold level LEED Certification for the facility. Sustainable features planned for the building include a green roof and fresh air cooling, with many other green features to be finalized during the design phase.

The six-story building will be 315,000 square feet, with 143,000 square feet of raised floor area. Preliminary plans call for a reinforced concrete structure, with 18-foot ceiling heights, heavy floor loading, space for full generator backups, and heavy-duty, high-efficiency cooling systems.

Chicago-based JRM Technology LLC is dedicated to developing data storage facilities throughout the Chicago area. Additional information is available by calling (312) 821-0302.
