GIS-Centric Permitting and Licensing Product Produces Solid Benefits
December 01, 2010-- Sandy, UT — West Valley City, Utah, is experiencing improvements throughout the City due to their utilization of Cityworks PLL (Permitting, Land, and Licensing), the latest addition to the Cityworks suite of products by Azteca Systems, Inc., the leading provider of GIS-centric management solutions. As one of the first users of the product, West Valley realized immediate results upon its implementation in January 2008. Cityworks PLL continues to provide solid benefits to the City as they discover additional ways to use the product within its divisions.
Cityworks PLL is a GIS-centric community development and management software application that enables agencies to track permits, planning, and development activities; engineering processes; business and regulatory licenses; and code enforcement cases, from initiation to closure. As an enterprise, web-based software, Cityworks PLL is utilized at West Valley simultaneously in various departments and out in the field, giving each user a live view of the current status of every case. The software is used by the Planning & Zoning and Building Departments for permits and inspections and by Code Enforcement for all cases, violations, and courtesy notices. Cityworks PLL allows West Valley to track and manage these cases and tasks much more efficiently. Building inspectors are entering inspection results real-time into Cityworks from the field rather than handwriting and reentering them into the system later, saving time and giving contractors readable, immediate results of their inspections.
“At West Valley City, Cityworks PLL has improved the users work process substantially since the go-live,” stated Ken Cushing, Database Administrator and Network Supervisor at West Valley City. “Specifically using the workflow, users no longer have to print out hard copies and hand-deliver or email plans and permits. Before Cityworks, the divisions had no way to track who had the plans and when they were passed to another person for approval. Now any of the divisions can use Cityworks to check where in the approval process a development might be, including administrative staff. The amazing thing about Cityworks is that it is set up in a way that it can be used for many different things. It seems like every time we turn around, we are finding another way a division can use Cityworks.”
West Valley has continued to expand the use of Cityworks PLL into additional departments since going live, including Community & Economic Development, Fire Department, and Public Works. The Legal Department is in the process of integrating to the Code Enforcement workflow rather than entering information into a separate system, and the Police Department has access to Cityworks to monitor code violations on problem properties.
“As an early adopter of Cityworks PLL, West Valley City was wonderful to work with and contributed directly to the development of the program,” states Brian Haslam, President of Azteca Systems. “ We are pleased West Valley experienced results from the onset and continues with solid results, which is a testament to the superior quality of this product. PLL is an exciting addition to our suite of products and provides outstanding returns almost immediately upon implementation.”
