SOUTH AFRICA - 1:50K GIS Vector Data

A recent exhibition at a tradeshow in South Africa brought us an unexpected dataset, complete 1:50,000 vector coverage of the entire Republic of South Africa.  Produced by the Department of Rural Development and Land Reform, digital topographic information has been captured from the department's 1:500K and 1:50K map series.  This information has been topologically structured and stored as features (such as all roads, railways, built-up areas, rivers and contours) of the entire 1:50,000 national series (1913 sheets).

ImageSat International logo
As you may already know, EVC supplies satellite imagery to a wide variety of industries.  In order to be successful with this "Jack-of-all-trades" approach, we must know the satellite imagery industry in and out and fortunately, we do.  Each provider tends to have a niche and our job is to connect our customers with the imagery that suits them best.

EVC has been an official reseller for ImageSat International for well over a year after a fruitful visit to ImageSat's office in Tel Aviv, Israel.  Among its many distinguishing qualities, ImageSat's quick image acquisition delivery is second to none.  Their

earth remote observation satellites (EROS A: 2.4m and EROS B: 0.7m) offer autonomous high-resolution panchromatic imagery that is perfect for companies that need prompt turn-around time with imagery collections.  This is especially true for the oil and gas world where panchromatic products make ends meet seamlessly.  This swift turn-around time is accompanied by very competitive prices making ImageSat's EROS imagery a fine choice for any imagery-based project.  The trend is for faster imagery collection in the geospatial arena and ImageSat is a leader by offering turn-around times for new imagery collection of 24-48 hours, under favorable environmental conditions.

ImageSat provides its services through various exclusive license programs.  EVC is well attuned to these programs and is happy to set you up with the program that works best for you.  In addition, ImageSat maintains an expanding imagery archive, which contains various images sent by its earth remote observation satellites.  The company offers its services to governments and their defense forces, as well as to civilian government and commercial clients for geospatial information, infrastructure, mapping, and environment and disaster control applications. The company was formerly known as West Indian Space Ltd. and changed its name to ImageSat International N.V. in June, 2000. ImageSat International N.V. was founded in 1997 and is headquartered in Limassol, Cyprus with an additional office in Tel Aviv, Israel.

Technical Bullet

  How'd they do that?

Geological Vector Data Extracted From Geological Maps

A great thing about EVC is the wide variety of clients we serve along with their wide variety of geospatial needs.  This keeps us on our toes and ready for new challenges.  This month's Technical Bullet arises from our desire to keep up with needs of our Oil, Gas & Mining customers.

WHAT?

Geological Vector Data Extracted From 1:24,000 USGS Geological Maps

Knowing what is in the ground before digging is an obvious necessity.  Therefore, maps providing this knowledge are a must.  GIS vector data providing this knowledge is even better.  With geological vector data, a geologist can begin exploring for resources right from the office by performing analysis on multiple layers within a GIS.

A large minerals exploration company came to us in November with a 1:24K USGS geological map over an area in the southwest United States.  They had been using a raster version for exploration and needed a GIS compatible version.  We estimated this geological feature extraction job to take four weeks and met our goal by delivering the solution less than a month later.

WHY?

The trend for digitizing geological mapping is coming on strong.  In the past year, we have seen opportunities for this jump exponentially.  This trend will continue to increase as more and more mineral exploration companies realize the benefits of this type of GIS data.

Traditionally, most geological mapping is provided by various government agencies.  EVC has taken on the digitizing and attribution of the maps and the end product is simply stunning.  How do we do this?  Keep reading.

WHERE?

EVC has the source materials to create this data for many Oil, Gas & Mining hot spots around the world.
Customer-supplied maps for specific AOI's, as in this case, are also welcome as source material.

Geological Vector Extraction Final Product

HOW?

From colors on paper to analytical stratigraphy, here are the steps of bringing geological raster data to metadata supported vector data:

1. Source geological map is scanned and georeferenced into UTMz12N/NAD27 projection.

2. All features present on the map (including all cultural, topographic and geological objects) are vectorized using heads-up digitization.

3. Data is stored in geodatabase and fully attributed in accordance to the map legend.

4. QC/QA is performed to assure that the dataset is complete, consistent, topologically clean, correctly extracted and attributed.

5. Data is symbolized in GIS software in order to visually represent the dataset.

Utilizing our geospatial skill set and toolbox to find cost-effective solutions for our clients is what we do.  We are happy to tackle new opportunities that keep us on the leading edge of the ever-changing geospatial industry.
