The new Freescale LIN SBC family features three highly integrated, pin-compatible devices. The MC33910G5 combines power management capabilities that contribute to low battery discharge during low-power modes, a robust LIN physical layer and a high-side driver. In addition to these capabilities, the MC33911G5 features a DC motor pre-driver, and the MC33912G5 offers a DC motor pre-driver with current sensing.
The LIN SBC family is ideal for space-constrained, electromagnetically sensitive LIN slave applications, including designs that require motor control and current monitoring. When combined with a Freescale 8-bit S08 microcontroller (MCU) or an entry-level 16-bit S12 MCU, the SBC devices can be applied to a wide range of automotive comfort and body applications. SBC/MCU combinations are widely used in door systems, power mirrors, window lifts, sunroofs, multifunction steering wheels, HVAC and fan controls, lighting controls and LIN network-controlled wipers.
Freescale’s LIN SBC devices have been certified by conformance test labs, such as the C&S Group, and by EMC labs, such as IBEE-Zwickau, for general use in LIN/J2602 networks by leading automakers. Industry certification of Freescale’s LIN SBC products helps to accelerate design-in schedules, to reduce development costs, and to minimize test and debugging issues.

Freescale’s LIN SBC family is designed to meet stringent automotive electrical requirements. According to IEC61000-4-2, the newly announced SBC devices are designed to sustain harsh energetic ESD pulses up to +/-11kV without the need for external protection components. The devices’ innovative wave-shaping technology also helps to enable ultra-low electronic emissions. EMC and ESD are a serious concern in harsh automotive environments due to the close proximity of a wide range of networked electronic systems and devices.

Manufactured on SMARTMOS technology, Freescale’s LIN SBC devices combine a LIN physical layer transceiver with a voltage regulation watchdog and other functions, such as high-current, high-voltage output drivers. An SBC integrates many functions needed around an MCU-based system, such as power management, physical layer interface, system safety features, protection and diagnostics, into a single monolithic IC.
LIN technology is a universal asynchronous receiver-transmitter (UART)-based serial communications protocol designed to support remote nodes in automotive networks. LIN networks provide a cost-effective, single-wire master/slave architecture for connecting motors, switches, sensors and lamps.
The compact size and high level of integration of Freescale’s LIN SBC products enable control units to be attached directly to motors and other loads, minimizing the need for additional connections and wiring.
