As of November, GfK MACON is supplying the new 2005 version of the digital map edition "Europe Postal and Administrative". The 2004 map set has been completely revised and expanded to include additional, detailed map levels for Romania and Bulgaria.
November 16, 2005 -- The Europe Edition comprises the postal and administrative territories of all European countries including Turkey. These territories are supplemented by a large selection of topographical map layers, such as roads, railway lines, city areas and elevations. The maps are provided as vector data in the standard GIS formats Shape (ESRI), mid/mif (MapInfo) and RegioGraph (GfK MACON). All map objects are fully inscribed and include the national as well as the international terminology and characters where necessary.
The complete postcode maps of Romania and Bulgaria are an entirely new and exclusive addition to the Europe Edition 2005. The latter are attributed in Cyrillic as well as Latin characters. The four-digit postcodes of Bulgaria subdivide the country into 4,696 delivery areas, while the six-digit postcodes in Romania produce an even finer grid with 14,150 different areas. Thus, a very fine differentiation of corporate data is now possible in these countries, too.
In addition to this, many changes have been made to the existing maps. Due to territorial reforms, more than 3,000 territorial units have been newly formed or dissolved throughout Europe in the last twelve months alone. There were also countless boundary shifts and name changes. "In Eastern Europe in particular, both the postal and the administrative boundaries have been subject to many changes in the last few years", says Klaus Dittmann, Head Cartographer at GfK MACON. "Almost every country has implemented comprehensive territorial reforms in recent years and this has, of course, brought about a corresponding number of corrections in the maps".
But in other parts of the continent too, territories are being adapted to a modernized administrative structure. For example, the postcode districts in the northern Spanish province of La Coruña have been completely restructured, with the result that their number has almost halved. A similar thing took place in Germany. More than 250 communities were merged, 225 of which were in the states of Brandenburg and Saxony-Anhalt alone.
With its complete coverage of all of Europe with uniform, high-definition, non-overlapping regional maps, GfK MACON is satisfying crucial demands in the sales, controlling and marketing departments of many companies. To an increasing extent, strategic alignment and territorial allocation plans are made across national frontiers. With seamlessly matching postcode maps - e.g. of Austria, Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Hungary, which are contained in the Europe Edition as standard elements - large sales maps for transnational planning can be formed quickly.
