More than 200 attendees listened to a wide range of speakers discuss how remotely sensed data has been used successfully at their organizations—as well as what challenges the industry faces in the future—at the inaugural Remote Sensing and GIS Summit held in conjunction with the
2008 ESRI International User Conference in San Diego, California, this past August.
Keynote speaker Dr. Bradley Doorn, remote-sensing program manager at the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), discussed the importance of focusing on end users' needs when exploiting raster imagery. Working with the USDA to monitor the world's food supply, Doorn has made the information derived from remotely sensed data a key economic indicator for global crop analysis.
A delegation of
MAPPS members were provided the rare opportunity of sit in seats in the members seats on the floor of the United States House of Representatives yesterday, occupying seats usually reserved for members of Congress. MAPPS members were the guests of House Republican Whip, Rep. Roy Blunt (R-MO), to sit in the House chamber and hear Republican members of Congress discuss the need for national energy legislation.

GeoEye, Inc. announced the filing of its restated financial statements with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for 2005, 2006 and 2007 and for the quarters ending September 30, 2007 and March 31, 2008. In addition, the Company filed its financial statements for the period ending June 30, 2008 and is now current with its financial filings. See

Topcon Positioning Systems (TPS) announced Dave Henderson is the company’s new GIS national sales manager. Henderson is responsible for GIS sales activities for Topcon’s GIS dealer network in the United States and Canada.
New Products
DIMAC Systems, a global provider of digital aerial imagery solutions, has unveiled its latest generation IT Rack, the centralized image acquisition system of its renowned DiMAC (Digital Modular Aerial Camera). As the lightest and most compact digital aerial image acquisition system of its kind, the IT Rack has been designed to be fitted on any type of aircraft, from small single engine planes to large bi-turbo ones. Its design, size (HxWxD: 44x27x36cm /17x11x14 in) and weight (35kg/75lbs) make this tailor-made anti-vibration rack extremely easy to install on and remove from any aircraft.
deCarta, supplier of software and services for the Location-Based Services (LBS) industry, launched deCarta Mobile, a location platform supporting location-enabled application deployment on mobile devices. deCarta Mobile is a client/server architecture with an easy-to-use J2ME client application programming interface (API) that provides a framework for rapid development of mobile mapping applications. The framework provides mobile application developers with the ability to easily implement modular fluid maps, panning, zooming, routing, geocoding, reverse geocoding and pin overlays into their applications.
MapQuest announced the launch of MapQuest Local, a unique set of local features that have been integrated into the MapQuest.com website. From one convenient location, MapQuest Local provides users with locally-relevant content, including news, events and videos for the city or destination of their choice. MapQuest Local can be accessed by clicking on the “Local” button on the
MapQuest.com website or by going directly to
Global Map Systems announced the release of their LOGIQ PDF product suite -- GeoDataEmbed and GeoDataVu, the most advanced PDF map publishing tools available on the market. With these products, map-makers can create PDF maps that allow for powerful spatial analysis features typically found in products like ESRI's ArcMap. This functionality is made available for free to Adobe Acrobat users.
Tri-Global Technologies LLC will introduce its new Tri-Global Mobile Utility Suite at the Partner Software Users Conference being held September 8-12 in Athens, Ga. The Tri-Global Mobile Utility Suite integrates the company’s popular UtiliMapper, BarcodeMapper and MobileStaker products into a single software package for use by mobile field personnel.
softelec’s new Version 3 of their VPmap Series software has become available with a number of considerable enhancements. Both products, VPmap and VPmap pro, provide a unique set of functions and features for capturing spatial data from scanned maps with cost-saving efficiency. VPmap Series V3 now also include full function sets from softelec’s latest VPHybridCAD product line release, while containing additional specialized tools for applications in the field of GIS and cartography. Both, Windows and AutoCAD 2004 to 2009 platforms are supported with one single license.
GfK GeoMarketing recently updated and expanded its digital map set for Turkey. The revised map set includes, for the first time, a map with coverage of the country’s 3,273 five-digit postcode districts as well as a map featuring 6,754 urban and rural neighborhoods.
