SuperGIS Server Set for Summer Release

By Susan Smith

This week GISWeekly profiles an interesting Taiwanese company called SuperGeo Technologies, Inc., who are developing their own software, and currently marketing their SuperGIS Server to be released this summer. SuperGIS Server is positioned to pose competition to existing well known GIS servers. SuperGeo already is a well-known GIS company in Asian markets, yet have marketed their products worldwide, according to Sarah Liu, International Marketing Division, SuperGeo Technologies, Inc.

GISWeekly: What is the price of your SuperGIS Server? Is it going to be cheaper than other GIS servers on the market?

Sarah Liu: SuperGIS Server is in Beta now, and will be released in the early summer 2009. The final price is not confirmed yet, but our pricing strategy will be highly competitive with a target at a lower price level than all the brand names of well-known GIS servers. The following are prices of SuperGeo’s existing products:

Users can publish and maintain GIS services with SuperGIS Server.
SuperGIS Desktop GIS : $1,350

SuperPad : $ 445

SuperWebGIS : $6,750

GW: Who is your intended audience, i.e., IT professionals, GIS users, non-professionals? How will it be made available (web, CD-ROM, etc.)?

SL: Focusing on professional GIS software, SuperGeo is a global company with headquarters in Taiwan. We have marketed our products globally for more than 20 countries, especially aiming at Asian countries. Our intended audience is professionals, such as GIS users, GIS consultant companies, on-line GIS service users and providers, and survey industry companies. Government agencies and educational institutes are also within our clientele. Our products are available both by CD-ROM and by online download service from our website, so the customers can conveniently have more choices.

GW: How does it compare to other offerings such as ESRI ArcGIS Server?

SL :The operation and functions of SuperGIS Server are similar to those of ArcGIS Server.

GW: It appears from your press release that SuperGIS Server is easy to use and requires little or no training, is that the case?

SL: SuperGIS Server provides comprehensive application functions to fulfill different user demands for the most flexibility. Most end users use only parts of the Server functionality, so the training for these needed functions are limited. If the user is already familiar with the functions of desktop GIS or Web GIS, no extra training will be required.

SuperGeo not only markets worldwide, but also has numerous users in Taiwan, who are able to use new products and provide valuable and prompt feedback for us.

GW: Is SuperGIS Globe a global information system like Google Earth or Virtual Earth? If so, how does it differ from those offerings?

SL: SuperGIS Globe is a platform that can retrieve image content via the Internet and maintain GIS functions at the same time. By means of SuperGIS Image Server, SuperGIS Globe can perform image stream service and keep the convenience of using GIS vector or raster layers dataset without data conversion or map projection conversion. Apart from SuperGIS Globe, SuperGIS Image Server can also be co-used with Web or Mobile GIS devices to reveal data. The Beta version of SuperGIS Image Server is going to be released in April, 2009, and the product is expected to launch in the early summer, 2009.

As for the differences, SuperGIS series products are designed for professional use, not for consumer markets. We offer server software and its related applications to the “professional GIS domain,” but no data or service offerings like other brands.

One of SuperGIS Server's extensions, Network Extension, provides various spatial analysis functions based on traffic networks, so that the end users can obtain the network information via their browser.
GW: Are the plug-in analyst extensions like those of ESRI Spatial Analyst?

SL: We have 6 analyst extensions for Desktop GIS applications, inclusive of SuperGIS Spatial Statistical Analyst (similar to ESRI Spatial Analyst), SuperGIS Biodiversity Analyst, SuperGIS Topology Analyst, SuperGIS Network Analyst, SuperGIS Spatial Analyst, and SuperGIS 3D Analyst.

GW: Are the different extensions and parts of SuperGIS Server compatible with popular software program file formats, such as ESRI Shapefiles, DWF, PDF, DWG and others?

SL: SuperGIS Server series products support popular formats like Shapefiles, DXF, and MIF. In fact, all SuperGeo serial products are developed from the powerful core components, SuperGIS Engine, which supports not only feature class data (such as SHP and MIF), but also raster class data. Therefore, SuperGIS Server products, along with other SuperGeo software, are able to support many other kinds of data.

The supported file formats are listed as the following:
  • Supports vector files in GEO format.

  • Supports various commonly used vector file formats, such as SHP, MIF, DXF, E00, SEF, DWG, and DGN.

  • Supports various commonly used image data formats, such as MrSID, GEOTIFF, BMP, GIF, JPG, JPG2000, ECW, PNG, LAN, and GIS.

  • Provides a data conversion tool to convert between SHP, DXF, MIF, E00, SEF, DWG, DGN, GML, KML, DGN, BNP (cadastral format), and Geo.GW: Is the product open source?

  • SL: All the SuperGIS series products are researched and developed by SuperGeo Technologies, Inc. They are commercial products.

    Top News of the Week

The superb accuracy defined in the
TerraSAR-X data product specifications has now been confirmed by the Civil and Commercial Applications Project (CCAP) Group within the
National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA): The group published the results of their geolocation accuracy evaluation of TerraSAR-X radar satellite imagery during the ASPRS Annual Conference in Baltimore this week.

In a contribution titled "Geometric Precision in Space Radar Imaging: Results from TerraSAR-X", Thomas P. Ager, NGA System Engineer for Radar, and his co-author Paul Bresnahan of Observera Inc. describe the evaluation processes and parameters applied to 13 high-resolution SpotLight and another 13 StripMap acquisitions. These were collected in single-polarization (VV) mode, generated as Multi-look Ground-range Detected (MGD) products with Spatially-Enhanced (SE) processing, and included the rapid orbit metadata.

Telvent introduced, with its business partner
Echelon Corporation, the new Pilot-in-a-Box Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) program at the DistribuTECH Conference and Exposition held early in February in San Diego, California. The Pilot-in-a-Box is a fully working, preconfigured system ready to connect, providing electric utilities a low-cost and low-risk means of studying AMI implementation.
