During a natural disaster such as a wildfire, a threat to homeland security, or an emergency such as a chemical spill, agencies rely on a common operational picture (COP) to monitor, respond to, and manage the situation. A COP creates broad situational awareness by combining important geographic information system (GIS) basemap data, such as imagery, critical infrastructure, and hazards, with changing, up-to-the-minute information from cameras, sensors, and other communication devices.

ESRI will host a seminar on September 24, 2009, to demonstrate how a COP can be created using ESRI's ArcGIS software. Creating a Common Operational Picture with ArcGIS will air at this

New Products

Softelec has released a new version of its VPHybridCAD and VPmap Series software for editing and conversion of scanned technical and geographical documents. All products now support all AutoCAD platforms from 2004 to 2010. However, users will have a free choice of stand-alone Windows or AutoCAD-based operation during installation.

gViewTek announced the availability of Web 3D GIS framework with a "mini-Google Earth" web control and 2D map. The framework provides a powerful customized 3D terrain web control/plugin, which is able to integrate with 2D map through OpenLayers, MapFish, and ExtJS. The customized 3D terrain web control/plugin makes it possible to load user own DEM data along with specific resolution, image texture, and objects. Like a "mini-Google Earth", it provides properties and methods to realize 3D features, supports Javascript script to set the properties and call the methods. Along with 2D map API OpenLayers, MapFish, and user interface API ExtJS, the framework provides a powerful 3D
and 2D GIS solution.

Dotted Eyes is launching Contractor Portal, a web application for local government organizations that simplifies the distribution of Ordnance Survey and other spatial datasets to their contractors.

Local authorities carry a significant workload when distributing datasets including preparation and completion of paperwork, selection and processing of datasets, timely distribution of the completed data cut-outs and compliance with strict contractual terms.

The new
GRS-1 handheld RTK GNSS receiver now supports Pocket 3D software. Pocket 3D Version 9.0 is a Windows Mobile 6.1 release intended only for use with the GRS-1 and is designed to be used as part of a GPS network solution.

The GRS-1 RTK rover features:

introduced Envista 2009 Release 2 of their web-based software for infrastructure project coordination. The map-based system facilitates the planning process for construction and maintenance work in and under roadways. This new version unveils breakthrough features generated from customer feedback, including Permit View, Event Coordination, Collaboration Ready Maps, Custom Spatial Query, and Multipoint Map Sketching. The Envista coordination solution optimizes project timing and detects project conflicts among towns, cities, utilities and highway agencies. The efficiencies gained through better coordination result in fewer street cuts in newly paved streets
and less disruption for commuters and neighborhoods during the construction season.

James W. Sewall Company announced the launch of ASGPipeline Generation 3.0, the newest version of Sewall’s industry-standard pipeline alignment generation software. Generation 3.0, to be commercially released in late 2009, introduces ASGPipeline Designer, an innovative graphical interface for fast, intuitive pipeline sheet layout and definition.

Tracker Software Corporation
has completed development on its latest add-on module – MapViewer II. Used in conjunction with the Asset Management Core, MapViewer brings the ability to map all appropriate PubWorks data with one click. Already in use in Boulder County, Colorado, Miami Township, Ohio and Schaumburg, IL, public works professionals are mapping service requests, work orders, sign management for retro-reflectivity compliance and the activity and cost associated with each.
